- OK, I'm about 250km into a 300km ride this afternoon, and while coming off the throttle (approx 60km/hr) I grabbed a bit of brake 'cuz I thought we were turing at an intersection and instead went straight.

- I glided thru the intersection, and when I grabbed the throttle again, there was a HORRIFIC sound!

- It was like something let loose!

- Well...I shut her down and started to wonder. I had motor, but when I give it gas (in forward & reverse) it makes a loud rattle as if a drive chain has let loose.
- I've never had a drive chain go before. Do these things just go like that?
- Also...I can't seem to get it back into reverse now. Found that out while loading onto a trailer after dragging it to a nearby road.
- FYI...while towing it, the track was "locked" up.

- Any ideas on what I've done?
- All help is greatly appreciated before she goes to the dealer.

Sounds like you broke your drive shaft. tip the sled up and look up in the very front of the track, Id guess you broke the drive shaft and... Yes... These are known for that... unfortunately..

UM... well.. If the dealer does it, at $70+/hour it can get costly fast. Its not too hard of a job to do yourself, probably moderate in difficulty. It requires taking the chain case apart to remove the old shaft, then you have to have your plastic drivers pressed off your old shaft and pressed on the new one.. I have done 2 of them in my garage and only cost was the parts, and having a local shop press the drivers on and off. I think the shaft was around $150 and pressing the drivers was about $25. Not bad at all if you do the work your self. But if its done by a dealer the labor cost will drive the price up... up... up....

check it out to be sure this is your problem, but I'd bet it is...

Pin that holds the chain tensioner broke off at the case. That is my guess.

Also a possibility.. not as common from my experience as the drive shaft breaking but definatly a possibility. Its easy to look at the drive shaft and see if its broken. If not, Id definatly look inside the chain case.. However the fact that this happened at a time of slight break engagement followed by coasting and a change in directional force leads me to believe drive shaft.

Let us know when you find out, Id like to know..

This video will explain what a busted drive shaft sounds like:

About a week after I shared that video with my father-in-law this season, his drivesahft broke on his ZR 800!

He ended up finding a new one on eBay (complete with drivers) for way less than retail. Labor was all us. I think he had less than $80 into that repair. It took us about 3 hours, both of us, working together start to finish.

sounds like a drive axle to me, I just had the same thing happen a week or so ago. Not a hard job, just time and you have to pay close attention to the chain and gears, lots of little parts in there that have to go back just right.
good luck,
dave

- I'm working a whacky shift right now, and not alot of time to dwell on it, so I dropped it at my local Yamaha dealer today.
- They're opening it up on Monday and gonna let me know the damage before proceeding.

- Crossing my fingers...

- I'd still like to know what caused it in the first place?

- The Apex is new to me, so I'm not familair with it.
- Is this an automatic adjustment?
- Would the dealer have checked this prior to me buying it 4 weeks ago?

if the chain was broken then the question is did the tensioner go then cause the chain to go? or did the chain go and cause the tensioner to go?

I've never ever heard of a tensioner breaking but i have heard of chains breaking, if a chain breaks at relatively high speeds it could take the tensioner with it because it could be pretty catastrophic.

I have no idea how the tensioner would break without the chain blowing apart.

- I'll know more tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure he said chain & tensioner both went.

- He quoted me approx $700can for the parts and about 2hrs labour.

- I'm going to the dealer tomorrow and talk directly to the mechanic and take a few pics.
