- They say $680 in parts and 2hrs labour.
- I'll see the parts list today.
That's outrageous. I think your dealer is taking advantage of someone he knows doesn't have time to research this out. Go online, Ronnies Mail Order. Go on the OEM parts finder and look up all the parts. If you check off what you need and put them in your shopping cart, then you can do like you're going to purchase them and the prices come up. Then you just exit without buying anything. Simple way to see what full retail for a part is. Or, call Port Yamaha. They are the best. This dealer sounds like he's ripping you.

I'm not so sure. Dealer is probably quoting "genuine" Yamaha parts at list price like most dealers. Also, wouldn't this be Canadian pricing? I had to redo a chain case on a Phazer years ago and it cost me $225 just for the USED parts (new were like $450). The price sounds in line to me if they are replacing everything --

What I'd like to know is how one tightens the chain tensioner "too tight"? It's been the same directions as any Yamaha for the past cazillion years; loosen the lock nut, finger tighten the bolt, then set the lock nut.

How did you adjust it?

Yea, after I wrote this I got to thinking that if the cases and possibly a gear or two had to be replaced, then, yup, price sounds about normal. I agree that the chain should have never been that tight. Can't believe it would even go into reverse that tight. Must have used a wrench on the adj. bolt.

Dealer went down 2 teeth I think on my RX1 and did nto change the chain so the tensioner was way out. Same thing happened to me hit brakes then hit gas quickly when a sharp corner came and broke the tensioner right off. Dealer took good care of me having another dealer do the work where I was and paying for it all.

Part of his question was 'would the dealer have checked this when I bought the sled 4 weeks ago'. They probably changed the chain case oil and checked or reset the chain tension while they were in there, wouldn't this be something that they should feel some ownership to? I would ask them if it was part of the sled inspection and maintenance before you bought it.

It wouldn't be Yamaha warranty but if you could prove that the dealer was the last guy to touch it and 4 weeks later it breaks then I think you have a case to share some costs or at least get them to do it for their cost. I know guys who have purchased used and blown the top end months later and still worked out a deal to get it fixed for much less than retail.

If someone adjusted the chain free play, and used a wrench, that will cause it. You adjust the bolt with your fingers, then back off, and tighten.

- Dealer is probably paying 50% of the fix.
- He won't admit it, but they had to be the last ones that touched it. I haven't.
- They came highly recommeded to me as a NY State dealer and for me to get down there (approx 2.5hrs from my house) drop it off, and then go back next week to get it just doesn't make sense to me.
- I have a local dealer here (20mins from my house) who does good work.

- As for pricing and "cheaper" parts...I'm one of those guys that does the name brand thing.
- I know, I know kinda stupid but it's just something I've always done with my vehicles. It'll never change.

- BTW...the chain is $240, the case is another $200 or so, three bearings @ $30 - $40 each...it all starts to add up.

- She's in good hands now, so I hope to have it back by the weekend.
- Just in time to put her to sleep for the summer. ;)!
