My jackshaft bearing behind the secondary wore out,the ballbearings were even hitting the belt gaurd and now i can't seem to get the outside race of the bearing out.Anyone got any ideas of getting this piece out?
RX-1M 8400 kms 0r 5250mi

snowman,
Sorry to hear about your problem. I looked at my bearings, at 1850mi, and the drive axle bearing was far from being dry, but it didn't look good. I flushed it, and put new grease in. I would advise everyone to do the same, after 1500 miles or so. It's easy to pop the seal, and add grease. A suspension wheel bearing won't ruin you day, but a jackshaft, or drive axle bearing will leave you stranded.

RXO- to do this you'd need to drill the hole in the seal. I don' t think there's room undeneath it (where the ball run)for the bottom of the zerk, and I think you'd ruin the seal while doing the drilling.

jackshaft bearing shot

Mine was gone at 800 miles, the tapered collar that held it to the shaft came loose and took out the bearing, spacer shims, and chewed up the back side of secondary. Also ruined the jack shaft. Yamaha knows there is a problem with this design and came out with a new style collar that has a nut on the inside to lock it to the shaft (04' s come this way) ,they fixed it on warranty. To pull the race out I used a piece of allthread and made a puller, so when I tightened the outside nut it pulled the race out of the chassis,Ken.

I heard the jackshaft bearing was different.... but no explanation as to why... now we've got it.... Thanks boost.

Is "allthread", as you call it, like "ready-rod"....pre-threaded rod?

From the Yamaha online parts page...here are the different parts on the jackshaft for '04....

Item Part No. Descr.
----- ------- --------
#17........ 8FA-17645-10-00 COLLAR
#18........ 8FA-17642-00-00 NUT, BEARING
#19........ 90209-25012-00 WASHER
#20........ 90201-25289-00 WASHER, PLATE (T1.6)

The bearing seems to have the same number for both '03 and '04.

Aaaaaaak .... the jackshaft has a different part no. for 04 as well...

the '03 part
#14....... 8FA-17681-00-00 SHAFT, SECONDARY

the '04 part
#14....... 8FA-17681-10-00 SHAFT, SECONDARY

I was going to order the changed parts.... now what to do... ?

Doing my preseason prep now so let me see if I got this.

Need to pull Primary and Secondary Sheaves off and grease bearings behind. Any special tools needed to dismantle or reassemble? Manual calls for Primary Sheave Holder tool to torque bolt. Any other ways to do it without tool?

Anything inside either sheave need grease? Manual states "lubricate with specified grease".

Does the Secondary Shaft and Front Axle on the PTO side need grease also or are they lubed by the Drive Chain lube? (Probably figure this out when I look again tomorrow)

Think I got the Front Axle on the clutch side covered. Pry off seal and grease with needle.

Anyone align and shim their Secondary Sheave to prevent floating as recommended Tech Section by BBY (I think)? Sounds like a good idea to me but what do I know, I'm a Newbie.

Sanks

rep,
There's no bearing on the primary to grease. It's the ones behind the secondary, and on the left side of the drive axle. You're right about the chaincase bearings being lubed by the oil.

I had a Storm that had a grease fitting on both. That would solve the problem, although it doesn't take that long to pop the seals, and grease with a needle. It seems like there should be a way to put a grease fitting in the cover on the drive axle bearing cover, and remove the seal, to allow the grease to flow in. The jackshaft bearing doesn't have a cover.

I put the belt height adjuster on my last 3 sleds, which takes the float out. On all three, I got a washer from the hardware to put behind the secondary, which aligned the secondary.

It is a device that fits under the secondary bolt head. You turn it to adjust the spacing of the sheaves, instead of pulling the secondary, and changing the washers on the 3 bolts. I've had mine for about 6 years. I'm sure someone will tell you where to get them now.

Just curious if you guys think this is an isolated problem or not. Just picked up my sled from the dealer, Hackers Yamaha, and I asked them about this. I read the posts earlier in the week. Dealer says they have not seen any bearing problems in the rx-1. My sled has 4,000 miles and I have not had any bearing problems. The wifes sxr600 has 7,000 miles also with no bearing problems. Makes me nervous thinking the dealer missed something, but I don't think so. Their service department is excellent. Guys having problems, keep us updated.
