Posted: Sat Dec 22, 2007 11:49 pm Post subject: HELP!!! PLEASE!!! RX-1 Running like a bags of HAMMERS!!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello. I have a 03' RX-1 ER that cannot get over 36 MPH. The most revs I get at that speed is 6000 rpm. It runs great at low rpm and Idle, but when you get over 1/3 Throttle, she sputters, boggs and then backfires!
I replaced the plugs (NGK CR9E), and put in new high octane fuel, but still the same results. Is there a coil, fuel pump or filter problem? I'm stumped.
Any Ideas would be appreciated!!!
Thank you
Leighton

If it's breaking up like that then it sounds like weak ignition. I would double check that the electrical plugs on the coils are connected good and tight and that the boot is firmly on the spark plug. If all is good, you should test the coils.
Here is how to test the coils and magneto:

Why the double post? Check the throttle adjustment as it sounds like the TORS throttle override system.

The TORS system limits the rpms to 4,000 max. If the engine can get up to 6,000 before breaking up, then it's probably not the TORS.
Take off the carb bolws and clean everything in there and all of the jets, also check the o-ring on the bottom of the jet to see if it is in good shape. i just went through this with a friend and I had to clean them 2 time. now it runs mint. His would not rev over 6 grand either.
Hope this helps you.

Actually we are both wrong I just checked the service CD and this is a quote..
THROTTLE OVERRIDE SYSTEM (T.O.R.S.)
If the carburetor or throttle cable should malfunction
during operation, T.O.R.S. will operate
when the throttle lever is released.
T.O.R.S. is designed to interrupt the ignition and
keep the engine revolutions between 2,800 and
3,000 r/min if the carburetor fails to return to idle
when the lever is released.
But if the cable is out of adjustment It may activate at any RPM .
The throttle will work properly til it activates then it will limit RPM.

beaker,
Welcome to TY!
Please take the time to fill out your location in your profile, site rules.
Also, in the future, please don't cross post to five different forums, makes a mess all over and reduces the number of effective replies you get. The guys will find it and if they don't, you can re=post in a different area in a couple days.
Thanks!

Sounds like your are too rich at that rpm, check intake make sure there is nothing blocking intake of air,or your jet size

Missing RX-1
03 RX-1's had a problem with wiring harness rubbing on frame and shorting out. Remove toolbox and storage container underneath, and check in the front bottom right side bellypan where the wire harness is routed to make sure it isn't rubbing anywhere. Hope this helps.

Re: Missing RX-1
Good idea.
Thats where my money rides.
Remove toolbox and beer can holder from nose, find the two tiny white wires and follow them to where they rub against the frame. Seal them from moisture and put some kind of protective shield over them, like a piece of fuel line.

would that cause it to loose power and cause bogging after 7000 rpm?

Clean the pilot jets, they are clogged with dirt.

Yes. The combination of engine frequency and wind may be causing the wire to move into position to ground out at about 7000 rpm.rx-1mountain said:would that cause it to loose power and cause bogging after 7000 rpm?
