I have the 'hot start' problem too. It drives me nuts to have to hit the throttle to start my sled when its warm. I've heard the ball valve shut off to the carb heaters takes care of this but haven't experimented with it (yet). I see similar temps riding as RaWarrior. I installed the temp gauge after riding one year with marginal snow and having the idiot light come on. Now if it looks like bad conditions I can prevent it....

ttt.....anyone else have an opinion one way or the other on a Yamaha rear cooler vs. a Pioneer Performance rear cooler??? They are pretty close to the same price, I think Pioneer's is about $40 more....thanks for any input!!!

I only use OEM ones from Port Yamaha, actually I wasn't aware there was a aftermarket one available. I though Pioneers was a OEM one. Doesn't much matter the extra cooling really works.

Going to jump in on this
I have an 04 Warrior, and this is the first year I've had significant cooling issues. We've had a lot of bad years for snow here in midstate NY, and it only has 900 miles on it. The only maintenance I've done is oil changes and new plugs/belts/etc at the start of every season (probably a waste of money, but I like to start each year fresh, regardless of wether I rode 80 miles the previous year or 300).
The last two weeks I have had the idiot light come on (the last time I saw this light was when the sled was brand new and under 100 miles, riding in a large group on packed trails)
The conditions were around 0 degrees on "hard as pavement" packed trails one week, and mid 30's on slushy/firm packed trails the next. Not a major deal, I just ran chunks of snow up and down the running boards to cool it, but I'd like to avoid it in the future. Go with the additional rear heat exchanger?
Also, is there any maintenance I should do to it, even though it's got relatively low miles? The carbs were cleaned at 500 miles.
Also, I've seen reference made to some aftermarket temp guages, I'll google those a bit to get more info, but any suggestions as to which is best, as well as any other improvements that can be made would be greatly appreciated.

I went with the rear cooler...I am in the process of installing it right now...not too bad really...only slight modification needed.
I also installed Ulmer's digital temp gauge, also very easy to install and well worth it!!! I want to know at all times how hot I am running without the light telling me!!!

I run a water temp gauge and its AMAZING how hot they get sitting there idling, no wonder there is a shut off feature built in to the ECU where it shuts itself off.
Going dowin a trail it runs right at 180 degrees. Coming to s stop right up to 210, light is on at 220 degrees.

Same problem here!!! I am hoping with the addition of my rear cooler, I can get the temp down some more while riding that I can have more time to spare when idling before having to kill the engine....but idk...

With my rear cooler which is tiny compared to your Warrior one it stays at 210 for around 3-4 minutes then climbs up slowly. I say I have about 5 minutes before the temp light would come on. That is quite a long time if you think about it though.

as i will do in the off season, make shure your coolant mix is 50/50 instead of the straight stuff yamaha likes to put in there.
was out riding mine with crewcheif and his buddies on sunday. there where 2 03 rx1 in the group and there was plenty of snow on the trails to cool the sled. their sleds the snow would stay on when we stopped. mine would drop its snow almost as soon as we stopped off of both the front and rear coolers.

What do you mean by the snow stays on/falls off the exchangers??? What does that have to do with the coolant mix ratio???

the pure is not as efficiant as runing the 50/50 mix whitch actually cools better.
when we would take a break on sunday, the 2 rx1 would not drop any snow when they where parked ie the snow flung onto the coolers by the track. mine, you could see where the snow dropped from the front and rear cooler while it was shut off for the 10 min break.
i am taking a digital thermometer with me the next time i go for a ride just to see how hot my sled is running.

OK.....I get it now.....so I got my factory tunnel protectors shortened and one side of my tunnel opened up to get the cooler wiggled in. I also got all nine rivots put in it and all the rear plastics reinstalled last night. The only thing I have left to do is refill the coolant system and bleed it, and I also need to fab up some protectors for my cooler. I have access to a machine shop, so I'm hoping this won't be too difficult. I have looked at the way some others have done it, and I'm just not sure how I want to do it yet. I will keep you all posted and get some pics up here when I get it completed. Would anyone else be interested in some protectors if I make some extras???

I got the protectors drawn on Solidworks, the 3D modeling program I use here at work. Everything in red is what will be fabricated and everything in the silver, aluminum coler is what's already there. All material is aluminum tubing and the four mounting plates in front are 1/8" aluminum sheet. All will be riveted together with 3/16" aluminum rivets. I am going to start making these probably this weekend, so if anyone is interested in a set, let me know ASAP!!!
Let me know what you guys think!!! See any potential problems with the design???
Thanks for any input!!!
