I recently cut my muffler open again and did a little more modifing.

I had ridden a 04 warrior in the UP and really liked the sound of it (modified) and thats why I opened mine back up.

I just opened the center and cut the two main tubes out(biggest ones) left everything else, very happy with the sound.

Ill be the first one to say i dont like loud exhaust for a trail sled, this is louder than stock but not bad at all.You can hear it a lot more when I turn my head backwards, still can hear the ECP kit so its not bad at all.

Video is under review but should be available shortly.

Oh I definatly picked up low end HP,Ive not had a chance to really open it up yet to see what gains if any I got up top but its definatly got more snap down low than previously. What I did originally was cut an opening from the inner chamber to the outer chamber on both sides, this made it ever so slightly louder and kept the same sound as stock. Now its got a snarl to it.

I dont mind that , I just picked up an excell so I will have to see what that sounds like when it gets here

Exhaust

I like that alot.
I have heard of several guys that mod ther exhaust and said the lost performance. I would go for that but don't want to loose performance. Keep us posted.

Yes I was very happy once I fired it up and heard it.I was worried it would be too loud at first.

Ive heard several yamahas with aftermarket pipes in the trail and they seem louder than mine IMHO which is perfectly fine with me.

Ill probaply take it out in the morning and run it out and see if i gained or lost rpms that will tell me if i made more or less hp or stayed the same.

Also if you go to the video and look to the right of it for "more from this user" you can find a video of me climbing a hill out west that was with the muffler modified the first way, definatly a different and better sound now.

Heres a picture of what to do.This is not my actuall muffler( I thought about taking a picture but didnt)its just a pic off this site. You can see where to cut with the white line I drew, just the two tubes I have marked is all i cut.The previous mod that I had done to my muffler does nothing since now the air comes in the middle at the bottom and exits right out the middle.I left the other tubes in thinking the air would bounce off them and deaden the sound somewhat.Same with the two cones where the exhaust comes into the muffler,I didnt touch them

exhaust

I did the exact same mod and love the sound, as you said it isn't overly loud just a nice little growl. mine has sweet spots at certain rpms where it sounds just like a crotch rocket. I had originally planned to gut the whole thing but a buddy talked me out of it, I'm glad now he did. a cheap mod for a great sound, not sure if real gains in hp seems in the low end but the sound can mes fool you.

WEll I put 50 to 60 miles on it this morning.I wish I had a dyno from befrore and after but im shure its got more snap down low,its even more noticable in the trail(hardpacked).I havent changed the clutching at all I got the same top end on the road I always test on and same on the hard pack.SO it didnt hurt my top end.Rpms seem about identical as from before.

I left my tools here I wanted to run it out and check the plugs but it started snowing pretty hard and wet sticking to everything and was getting on the inside of my shield.

My buddy came over and I was showing him the sound running around the house and thats what he said sounds just like a crotch rocket running around.

Id say its a more powerfull, performance sound.

It can be done with it in the sled, thats how I did it the first time.Second time I had a cracked header pipe so I had to pull it out.(note the TIG welder has no sparks thats why I did it in the chassis and if you do it in the frame make sure the ground is on the muffler so no current can go through the sled, wouldnt want the high frequency running through the sleds electronics)

I used a 3" air powered cut off wheel to open up the muffler.I then tried a sawazall to cut tubes out. But I didnt have enough room the way I cut it open so I kept bending the blade, ended up using torches to melt the tubes away and then used the sawazall to clean it up.

I think If I would have made the horizontal cut start at the back of the muffler I couldve just used the sawazall.

The stainless that the outer muffler is made out of is pretty thin.I have a TIG welder so I used that but I think a MIG welder would work as well.I wouldnt worry about using stainles rod or wire to weld it back together because the weld will be so much thicker than the actuall material your welding to I highly doubt it would ever rust out.

Oh and you dont need to cut it open nearly as much in the picture width ways because you only need to get to the center.
