New guy here, just signed up.

I have a 2009 Ski Doo Renegade P-Tek 800 in pieces due to a failed ring so since I'm not riding I've been shopping around.

What does Yamaha do differently to the 1049 engine in their High Performance version 140HP-? vs. the lower HP "Mid-Performance" 120HP used in some machines like the touring sleds?

(I think I also read that same engine is rated at a higher HP in Yamaha sleds than when they're used in the new YamiCat sleds.)

It seems like everyone these days are making great, reliable sleds and I was dead set on buying another Doo, in fact the exact same sled just a newer 800 E-Tec.
I love the power and the fact that the one or two times a year I want to take a passenger I can add a 1+1 seat or simply swap out the stock seat for a two person seat, (which I already have)

That being said I also run the US CVTech distribution center and I can honestly say first hand we very, very rarely get anything through our door for Yamaha.

So now I start pouring through magazines and online reviews about them to find out most guys who try them love them! Yes of course there are plenty of haters who scream "Too Heavy!" but at this point in my life I'll take weight over siting out in the middle of such a short season!

I believe the differences are in the cam shafts, the lower horsepower sleds geared more toward low end torque and fuel mileage. I actually like a little more weight in my trail sled. It makes them stick to the trail better---more stable epically at higher speeds. I rode a 800 ski-doo yesterday and every time I ride a Rev chassis they feel "nervous". The torque of the 4 stroke is very addicting!!!!

Fuel injection versus carbs for a while ... fuel mapping now I guess.
As for the 800 REV - nothing more twitchy / nervous than the nytro especially the 08/09's.

Vector / Venture 1049 engine is low 130's VS Nytro at high 130's in the HP Department.

The Vector motor is sweet & takes top spot vs others 600 2 strokes & Cats 1100 NA motor in a drag race plus throttle response is awesome.

I ride the carburated vector(09) and absolutly love it,i have it set up to my liking,it rails in corners, the power is more than enough for trail riding, just wish i would have better throttle response, but the efi motor is much better in that departement, would buy another one in a heartbeat

Thank you for the feedback. I didn't buy a new one yet, but I did a full rebuild on my 800 long track and now I'm considering a 2016 Doo 1200.
We'll see what happens by April 16th I guess.

I'm curious about the same thing in terms of mid performance 1049 in Vector and high performance 1049 in Viper. I currently own a 2015 viper Ltx dx. I'm thinking of going to a 2016 vector because of its fit and finish. Snowtrax review of the 2015 Vector also claim it outruns the Viper in all of their testing. Interesting that the "mid performance" Vector is faster than the "high performance " viper.

The vector is a little bit faster, probably a few mph but the seating position in my opinion not near as comfortable but yes fit and finish is better. Not for aggressive riding from my 15min vector test ride. Fuel miliage is unreal on the vector. My father in law has one. Nice unit though. From what some guys are saying the gearing is lower in viper.

Well in my opinion the engine is the same but that is where it ends. The viper uses the CAT ECU which has been a problem since day 1. The HP is down from the Vector and there is starting issues even after the reflash. 2nd the vector has the rear dump exhaust which allow for a straight flow of the exhaust out the back and a sweeter sound than the 180 degree turned header and belly dump exhaust of the Viper that does not like to be submersed in snow and will cause performance loss in deeper snow.

There is no comparison though on the ergonomics and ride differences with the Viper being a more up to date feel and ride quality once the shock valving issues are addressed.

Oh and the reason the vector beats the viper in stock trim is the CAT chassis bleeds a lot of energy. With a little work on the Viper like Dupont slides and extra boagies the track turns much easier.

Stators are different. Higher HP motors have lower wattage stator than the lower HP motors. Cam profiles, timing, injectors and fuel mapping and slight differences in exhaust flow.

The FX Nytro and SR Viper are the exact same motors.

The fuel injected RS Vector models have a different cam shaft profile, different valve springs, different ECU, different stator. The injectors, throttle bodies, etc are all the same between the two.

Man cant agree with you more,in 2012 I ordered a new procross cat turbo for 2013,all excited to think I bought the 2nd year, and it would be trouble free, wow was I wrong, first year I did manage to get 2400 miles on before it blew the chaincase and 10 belts, tearing all kinds of stuff up underneath. next year all fixed up according to my dealer,oh but now I am on cat don't care insurance, and even though I asked my dealer before I installed a program and muffler,if there would be any problem if it needed warrenty and he said no problem,we have had several come back with bad motors or what and we got it all taken care of,wrong once more,600 miles into 13/14 season I could feel the motor going south and oiling down my air filter,so back to cat/yammie dealer to see what it was, well leak down showed 18% mag side and 8% pto side, she was building pressure and blowing by the rings, time for a complete rebuild, well cat dragged there feet all year, until summer of 14 when the adjuster came to the dealers place and saw a TD muffler, said it had been modified and they would not stand behind it,oh boy on my dime,so I traded back into another Yamaha apex only this time it was to be a long track xtx,man this is what I should of traded my old apex in on to begin with, sorry for long reply,my point is,this year was one to remember for a long time, both reliability of sled 3000 perfect miles and gas prices lower than they have been in years, still on original belt, absolutely love the sled and it runs good top speed to boot gas milage in the high 15-16 with several times 19 mpg on very hard conditions.
