Hole in Chain Case!!??

Took the chain case apart today. I think I caught it in time because everything looked good. And, yes, it was the bolt that holds the driven gear in place. Funny, I never notice an oil spot on the garage floor.

kinger.........The chain case cover is at the welder. If he can't fix it, I'd be interested in your spare cover.

About two years ago, I had a "Professional" install a new ice ripper track. Apparently, Blue Loctite was not something in his tool box. :o|

Lucky for you

Was there any oil left in there at all?

Irv.......There was about an ounce of oil left on the chain case. The dip stick, however, dry.

Anybody know what the torque specs are for the driven gear bolt and chain case cover bolts?

Torque specs on cover bolts is 17 ft/lb (24 Nm) for the 12mm bolts and 35 ft lb (48Nm) for the 14mm bolts. As far as gears, for upper gear (large nut) is 65 ft lb (90 Nm) and lower gear bolt is 35 ft lb (48 Nm). See B,C, and D below. Dont forge to thread lock the lower gear bolt real good!

Hole in chain case

Happens when set screws back off on speedo side bearing,( clutch side) drive shaft walks and works bolt loose, lucky it did not break and take out both inner and outer case.

I also think there was a up-dated bolt for the bottom i will look at the tech books and post the part #

NY AttakGT............Thanks for the charts ;)!

darv...........The first 1/4 inch of threads were stripped off the old bolt and the rest of the threads were flattened down to about 1/32. I bought a new bolt from the dealer. As you mentioned, there is a new bolt. Here is the part number: BOLT, FLANGE 95817-10070-00 (replaces 90105-10068-00).

Honestly, I never paid much attention to the chain case in my sleds. After this experience, however, I'll keep a close eye on it. I was surprised at how much sludge accumulated in there. It took a full can of brake cleaner to breakdown the sludge.

How did it come out.

The welder was able to close up the hole. For aesthetic reasons, I painted the cover black. Fortunately, all the gears and bearings looked good and the chain was still tight. Although I only have about 20 miles on the repair, so far - so good.

Two things I take away from this experience:

1) Blue Loctite is your friend.
2) Keep a close eye on the chain case and change the oil!!

Did you have to fix the threads inside the axle. My bolt will not go back in.

Apex 06........The axel threads seem ok - the new bolt screwed in with no problems.
