So last year in the spring, my buddies talked me into spring checking an 850 renegade X.
Manta green & black...cool lookin sled.
It worked out good for me at the time because I still had a years worth of payments left on my viper ltx dx and I didn’t really want to make payments and insurance payments during the summer while I can’t use it. So I decided to trade it in, got rid of the payments for the year and I get a brand new sled with a 4 yr warranty come November.

This why I’m coming back to yamaha next year:
Buttons are to small on the handle bars, I have to look down at the bars to see what buttons I’m pressing, not to mention for the warmers which are extremely hot and gave me a blister on my middle finger, you have to press it like 10x to go all the way up or vice versa. I liked the yamaha being hi or low or off lol.

The bars are too narrow compared to the viper.

The sled is too light, yes I had more confidence and felt more planted on my viper. I’ll take that extra weight any day.

The accessories cost way too much and they get you for everything...like everything!!! I’ve never had my wallet feel so friggin empty before.

There’s no heated seat

I had to buy a 12v accessory outlet which I bought for my gps, but since that’s in the glovebox, I can’t close the lid because there’s nowhere to run the wire out of the box. The box gets snow inside it anyways.

A medium windshield cost me $300 and didn’t even completely protect me...I thought it would, but nope, off to spend anther $300 on a high windshield. My viper tall windshield which I still have for when I come back next season cost me $150!

I hate that I have to put 91 octane in and buy oil.

My clothes stink like 2 stroke...don’t get me wrong I love the smell of 2 stroke, just hate breathing it in all day and then having my house smell like it too.

One of the oil lines popped off with less than 400kms on sled covering my clutches, belt and the entire clutch side compartment with oil. Still don’t know what line it is or where it goes to, don’t matter though, it’s covered under warranty and I’m dumping this sled after this season.

And last but not least, my girlfriend wants a yamaha for next year. We were both born and raised yamaha, but I was going through a separation last year and wasn’t thinking to clearly when I made the switch. GF says she hates skidoo! Perfect, even more reason to come back into the light!

For as much snow as we have, I honestly can’t wait for this season to be over and get into a yamaha or 2 for next season.

Well don't think that a Yamaha is without problems lol.a snowmobile is the most fun you can have spending money

Other than the reflashes I had to get done, and a $50 primary bushing it was the best sled I’ve ever been on. I put 5000kms on my viper and it was great! I get it, all manufactures have their own issues...but Yamaha’s pricing for what your getting is very good and fair compared to skidoo anyways, not sure about cat or Polaris.

Right on. I came here from skidoo. Couldn't be happier. The only problem, I still own a 2stroke skidoo. Good sled. Just the adding oil gets old.

I agree, i love my 15 ltx dx, zero issue's with it until this latest flash(2 attempts to start), did a few modz including turbo this year and its even better now.

Does anybody know how the 18s are doing for problems?

What will you take for it? Pm me pics and price. I have a buddy that’s looking right now.

I’m finishing the season on it, it will be for sale next year.

Keep me in mind the way he moves may work out lol. He’s debating on upgrading to a 16 then trade in on a snow check at the moment or hold off ride his 10 one more year. Thanks

I almost made same mistake. New 850. Once bugs are worked out of it might still do it or Pol. But sure glad I bailed last year.

I agree. My hopes is a 650 etec in a 129 version do I dare say an 2nd Gen iron dog model. I like the viper and the ride is amazing with my new elkas. However the amount of body English you have to ride with in the trees is tiresome lol. I plan on keeping my viper for a long time. I would like to replace the wife’s gsx next year for a trail ripper. Have the best of both worlds.

They’re not bad sleds, the power is comparable to the winder and will lift the skis at half throttle, just not what I’m used to.

I’m sure they’ll bring out a 650...

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience, as that's a huge investment in a spring order sled. I have always owned yamaha, but I would have to say, that when buddies ask what to buy, Ski Doo is still on the top of the list for a few reasons. (next to yamaha of course)

1. we have no local support for warranty. I service myself, so it's a non issue
2. They don't make junk, and of the two strokes, the most reliable and fuel efficient
3. The smell we have in our group is from the AC 2-strokes. OMG!! The Etecs still smoke, but nothing like the damn AC's. And you usually smell like what you are following rather than riding.
4. The oil burn is the least amount of any of the 2-strokes. The Etecs in our group literally sip oil.
5. Yes, the accessories are expensive, but you have to admit, each and every one of them is thought through and very functional. Installation is super easy
Pre-marked holes for tunnel accessories, Pre-marked tracks for studs, clutching for altitude is cake, belt changes are easy

So if Yamaha were to fall off the planet, I would admit, I would buy whatever had a yamaha engine in it next, or a doo. I do agree too, I don't like the light twitchy feeling of some of the two strokes out of the box. But there is a ton to be said about proper setup. Out of the box, the new Renegades, MXZ's and AC ZR's feel uber twitchy as if they are trying to remind you that you bought a "light" sled. I will take my planted trail tank, thank you.

Good luck this season.

Blown belts, poor fuel and oil mileage and front handling still not on par with Pro Cross or axis. My Doo buddy buys new every year and he said last chance for them. His 17 850 has all the issues stated. Now his 18 is looking promising.
