OK guys I need some help. By purchasing a Apex ER in the US and importing it to Canada I can same approx $2,000 Cdn. Problem - I need some help!
1. Can anyone one recommend a couple of good Yamaha dealers close to the Ontario boarder (I'm coming from the Toronto Area).
2. Does anyone know what happens with the warranty?
3. What is the process - I understand that the US dealer can waive state tax with a declaration of residency - but what do I do to get it into Canada. Is there an expection that is needed and if so who will do it and what will it cost.
Any help would be appreciated!

YOU'LL BE PAYING THE TAX IN CANADA WHEN YOU CROSS THE BORDER. THE ONLY PAPERWORK NEEDED WAS THE REG. ALL THE OTHER NUMBERS THEY'LL WANT IS ON THE TUNNEL STICKERS. I SOLD AND DELIVERED TWO THIS YEAR. UNBELIEVABLE THE TAXS THEY MAKE YOU PAY. I WANNA SAY IT WAS LIKE 600 ON A MACHINE BOUGHT FOR 1000, BUT I THINK THAT WAS YOUR REG. TOO

Our Cdn taxes are a total of 15% of the purchase price once converted into Cdn dollars. Even with the Cdn taxes I should be able to save a couple thousand dollars!

The warranty is perhaps the biggest roadblock dependent on the dealer. My F5 was from Michigan and my dealer did all the updates under warranty with Cat. Never did it with a Yamaha though, one Cat dealer did refuse to do the updates, funny thing is that dealer so;d of ton of sleds to Yanks when our dollar was low.
You will also have to pay about $180 inspection fee and take it for a ridiculous safety inspection.

OK, this may sound stupid, but, why not just get a fellow TYer to buy it for you, (someone close to border) and just buy the sticker you need, I mean can't someone from the US buy a permit for the season? do you have any family in the states?

Buy the sled. Stop at U.S. customs. They can hold sled for 48 hours but if bought from a dealer you should be fine. make sure the serial #,s match all the paperwork you get or sled ain,t getting into Canada. Go to Canada customs. Pay GST & get forms for transport canada. Mail forms plus $182 to transport Canada. 10 days later TC mails you forms for a federal safety..usually done at Canadian Tire. You must get a letter from Yamaha Canada stating sled has no outstanding recalls(compliance letter) & bring to your safety appointment. After safety is completed( this is a joke) you are given all the paperwork you need to register the sled in Canada. This must be done with in 30 days or you get a nasty letter or phone call from Transport Canada & gotta pay a $110 to do it all over again.
I to am planning on picking one up in US. SRXboy lets order from same dealership and share the ride down to pick them up in sept ... let me know where you stand on price and location ... I imported a car last year so somewhat familiar with the process. RIDEONE [/b]

Was thinking the same thing myself...picking up a u.s. sled. I went and checked with my local dealer if I purchased a u.s. sled with warranty on it would it be good here. Their answer was absolutly no!! They said yamaha canada is separate from the u.s. division and thusly the warranty would not be honoured up here. I found this to be somewhat shocking and would like to find out if this is true.

You gotta take it back to the US for warranty. I am 70 miles from a US Yammie dealer so it ain,t a biggie for me.

Its not about showing support - with a $2,500 Cdn difference the pricing Yamaha is forcing on its dealer creats an arbitrage opportunity that can't be ignored. For $1,000 I'd turn my back but when you get into this much of a difference your a fool not to. As for the warranty issue - if I have to (which I doubt) return it I will - I'll have $2,500 in gas $$.picked192 said:now that's showing support for your manitoba dealers guy's

You must talk to Yamaha Canada on the pricing. A Canadian can save a minmum of $2500 on a new Yamaha by buying it in the US. For $500 savings it is not worth it but $2500 is a huge chunk of change!!!! There is something seriousley wrong with the Canadian pricing when you as a dealer can go down & buy a sled from a US dealer cheaper then you buy from Yamaha Canada! The difference in pricing is just too dramatic to not take a look at those savings. I realize you have families to feed but so do we & the price difference is just too large not to take a look.

Look here Yamaha Canada
$2000 CDN seems about right for savings between USA and CDN 2006 Apex models. See lower text for a reply back from Yamaha Canada Customer Service when asked about the large pricing discrepancy between USA and CDN pricing. Hmmm let's see, Southern Ontario largest snowmobile market, CDN dollar vs the Yen has been much stronger than the USA dollar. Don't forget USA can have $800 USD in Yamabucks and a 3 year warranty too. Things don't seem to add up do they Yamaha Canada !!!! There are also a number of phone calls from CDN dealers in at Yamaha Canada wondering the same thing and as of yet (weeks) there has been no reply.
I know there are dealers, DSM's and other Yamaha Canada and USA employee's that visit this site. Perhaps someone could take this message to the top at Yamaha CDN. How about, if this pricing structure is correct, a lawsuit against Yamaha for dumping snowmobiles into the USA market just as Mercury tried with Yamaha outboards !!!!

Reply from Yamaha Canada Customer Service when asked about USA/CDN pricing issues.
"Good afternoon.
It is impossible to simply answer this type of inquiry regarding pricing between
US and Canadian products.
There are many variables and fluctuations and the exchange rate today is not
necessarily the rate fixed when the prices were initially negotiated. Different
import expenditures, volume purchasing, and different associated costs of
operating in Canada vs. the USA. Such dilemmas are shared by Yamaha and other
importers and manufacturers.
I assure you we try and make our products as competitive as possible. I thank
you for contacting me and will share you opinion and concerns".

For you guys in Ontario near Niagara Falls/ Fort Erie area try Don George's Sport Center located in Clarence New York, (716) 759-6837 Ask for Don Jr. He usually has great prices and I know he has sold sleds to Canadian customers in the past. He's probably 1/2 hour drive from the Peace Bridge crossing into the States.
