harsh words, but I definitely agree. I dont see that doing much. would look better with open holes or no hoodRoest said:Those are by far the Cheesiest vents I have ever seen. The money you have saved ????? by using those (instead of something else already out there, or something custom that you make yourself that looks 100% better ) you will pay later by losing on resale or replacing the panels you have wrecked. I'm surprised you didn't make a hood scoop out of 4" dryer ducting!!

Seriously...No hood...Yeah that will look great...LOL It does work and I have the data to back it up...Engine compartment ran almost 30F cooler with vents and Engine Ice coolant.

go easy on the guy.
dam, if i scraped up all the money i could for a 9g sled and then couldnt afford the 300 cooler i'd look for cheap ways to cool it too.
I personally love it when the ugly, cheap looking vehicle SMOKES the pants off the Expensive blinged out YUPPIE mobile. I hate people who think money is everything. we're all here to enjoy a sport. if you dont like it, shut your mouth, hes not doing it to YOUR sled.

Hey, do you guys run scratchers out there? I asked but didn't get an answer. We have been using them for years out here. Without them, sleds with lightweight mountain skids and 2.25, 2.5, or 3" tracks on hard pack would get hot or melt sliders real quick. They make a real difference.

Coolant Testing
How exactly did you test the coolant mixture? What kind of tester did you use? These Yamaha sleds come from Japan with long life antifreeze mixed 10000L at a time. There is no way the coolant was mixed to strongly. You have to measure the coolant with a Refractometer not a "Bulb" tester. If you use the bulb tester the coolant will show to be mixed to strongly as stated.
billymx815 said:Step 1 - Test the factory coolant. When I chemically tested my coolant it tested at -68F. With that consistency it is 2nd to none for freeze protection but doesn't cool well at all. FYI coolant testers can be bought at any autoparts store.
Step 2 - Drain the factory coolant and replace with a good automotive 50/50 mix rated at -30F to -35F freeze protection or a high performance antifreeze designed for 4-stroke engines (i.e. - Engine Ice) which is rated at -28F freeze protection.

Good job on the ideas. It's great that someone out there is trying to figure out the issues with these sleds. Obviously Yamaha didn't do enough R&D to get it right and cooling was one of the issues.

My cooling suggestion would be run ice scratchers. I did a test earlier this year with ice scratchers. I rode the same 3 miles of trail with them up then put them down. It was a 17 degree difference!
Also they are very cheap like $50 or less and you can mount them on your skies or skid plus they will almost eliminate slide wear.

I do run scratchers (mounted on skid) and they help with hyfax wear big time but did not solve my overheating. The Maine Trail System is hard packed at best so the scratchers were a must or i'd be replacing hyfax every 300miles.

Re: Coolant Testing
I did not use a bulb tester although most of those are within +-10F. I used testing strips. The strip carries a pH indicator, a reserve alkalinity indicator, a buffering agent and a pad that will change color to correlate with various concentrations and freeze points of antifreeze solutions. Believe me they come from the factory mixed to strong for most (not all) applications. Just read more than half the post on the various overheating threads.

Well, I think we can agree that the short track Nytro cooling system is inadequate. One front heat exchanger and a rad that sees minimal airflow. I know it is more money but once you decide to upgrade I would opt for the MPI tunnel exchanger instead of the small MTX tunnel cooler. You could even eliminate the rad if you wanted to this way.

That's a good thought. I'll check out MPI's

scratch
i dont run scratchers yet...im too forgetful with the whole reverse thing. i just dip off trail whenever i can.
I only had the temp light come on once, but it was 40degrees during break in and i was idling and moving slow. goin down trail at 25mph made it go away. never saw it again.
billy is very right about maines ITS. alot of it is on powerlines and gets sun all day, then ices up overnight and stays that way for a good portion of the next day. plus they only build bridges if they cant fill the creek with snow or pallets. so water/ice on trail is pretty common. and this whole rainstorm isnt really going to help once it refreezes later this week.
