I have many track clips to replace. Tool is on back order. Can I doo it with Channel locks? Want to ride next weekend.

I would not recommend using a channel locks...I was there last year and you cannot crimp them tight enough. Maybe contact a local dealer and see if you can borrow / rent one.

I just installed 12 clips on my 07 RTX. I used the ATS track clip tool on page 169 of the 08 Royal Distributing catalog:
http://www.royaldistributing.com/Shoppi ... 2F169.html
Due to the shape of the tool it first closes the clip, tightens it up, and then compresses it hard top t bottom to bring the flat side of the clip hard up against the track. You have to tighten the bolt on the tool quite tight to get the clips to sit flat against the track (super easy with an impact wrench).
I can't see the plier-type tool doing as good a job and definitely can't see regular channel logs doing it.

If you don't want to replace them all again within a few miles of riding do not use a channel locks, vice grip or anything else besides a track clip tool!
Trust me, nothing besides a track clip tool will crimp them on tight enough for them to stay on.

I used vice grips to install 6 clips. It took awhile but i got them pretty damn tight. So far they are holding, and staying tight.

mckracker,
If your clips stay on in the long run I will be very suprised and also very impressed with your vice grip ability. I would shake your hand but I would be afraid of your grip!
Seriously, I hope that you are ok but my experience has been that nothing short of a track clip tool will keep the clips on in the long run.

If I had to do it over, I would get the long handled tool (about $45). The vise type takes too long. Try Spankys for tools.
