Jackshaft collar/nut ?

I have just finished putting the collar/nut of the 04 onto my 03, is there special tools to tighten it. Looked in the 04 tech book doesn't say a thing about it, looked on the dealers 04 shop maunal nothing either. Thanks
 
I do not have the 2004 tech book here, but I am sure that they offered a special socket to tighten that. They also offer one for chain case side. What I did was use a spanner wrench to hold nut and turned the clutch to finish tightening. I "carefully" tapped the taper in to start with so I pretty well had it set prior to the nut getting there. For positioning, you need the chain case side all tighted up prior to locking the taper to the shaft.

Hope this helps more than confuses.
 
I had the same question last spring when upgrading my '03. I couldn't find any special tools at that time (maybe now?) so I made a spanner like the ones used to adjust shocks and bent it so that it would reach behind the frame. Blackjohn used a pin punch while someone else held the bushing.

To hold the bushing, I took a short length of 1" pipe and ground out two teeth that would hold it while turning the nut and welded an old socket inside the pipe so it would fit on a ratchet. You could use a fine set of bent needle nose to do the job as well.

(Maybe it took more time to make the tools than it was probably worth but it's a simple job to snug that bearing now. There is something satisfying about making a useful tool as well. 8) )

A torque spec would be nice to know.
 
It sounds like the new collar is a pain to install. I don't know why people are doing it when they can lock the secondary. Either do it with washers, or with a quick adjust system. Locking the secondary is also prefered for performance. If you lube the bearing, it should last forever. Anytime I can solve a problem without disturbing the factory built parts, the chaincase in this case, I think I'm ahead. I've found that most problems result from amateur mechanics making mistakes. Even the pros make mistakes.

I installed a quick adjuster, about $30, and locktight the bolt, and the problem is solved. The adjuster also allows you to keep your belt height adjusted without taking the secondary off.
 
I went in because the bearing was going bad. It had not totally failed, but was definitely on it was out. It had grease in it, but was getting rough. I do not have the book, but the socket is a deep well looking unit with 2 tabs milled on the end that hold the inside piece while you use a spanner to tighten the nut.
 
Yooper, where did you get the quick addjuster? are they easy to install? Also is there a grese fitting behind the secondary? Thanks, I have never taken mine apart yet. Honk
