Leaky Trail Tank

NFLD-Nytro

I'll bet your right header donut is leaking and burnt through the insulation inside the heat shield. You'll probably find a mess in there when you take it apart..

Switch to the copper donuts and be done with it. Safer and longer lasting.

I think it goes without saying, the exhaust system on the Nytro needs to be well maintained. A friend of mine tested a prototype Nytro undertunnel muffler that split down the side at a weld line. After a marginal snow ride at high speeds for about 20 miles, the exhaust leak melted a large part of the tunnel!

The heat shield wouldn't stand much of a chance if the exhaust leak is big, and with the Trail Tank closer to the shield, lets just say the combo is a wee-bit dodgy.

Thanks! I'll check into that as well. I still have to haul off the header cover and I'll see what's under there.

I should've taken some pics when doing this, but anyway, I hauled off the cover, and the insulation was gone completely. The donuts were gone as well. Put in a new set, as well as new clamps, and got some muffler wrap for an arctic cat to cover the header pipes, and it's all back together.

Thanks for the help, everyone, figuring out why the tank would've melted. :rocks:

Thanks for posting this, I just ordered a set of copper donuts to go along with my new trail tank based on what you found.

That's a great idea, and I think in the instructions for installing the tank they should tell you to pull the cover and check the heat shield and donuts before installing the tank.

I'm not 100% satisfied with the tank, as there efforts to stretch capacity are a little extreme, making it harder to install than it could be. But it is very impressive how they've managed to fil an extra 10 lts of gas in there, and their costumer service is stelar.

Newf..what's the underside of the heat shield look like? Is the heat tape buggered on it? They seem to rot out after a while.

Shadow44,

How is your Hindle exhaust holding up? Any cracks, breaks, bad welds?

Mine is perfect...and it's a first production run system. My mig welds are perfect. PM me if yo have any concerns or problems.

I put on a new heat shield, new donuts and clamps, but I should've just got fire insurance. I tried patching the tank because I really needed the sled this week. Got out for a ride with it on Wednesday night, but Thursday afternoon we made it as far as the gas station. There was a bad spot getting over a bank so I got off my XF and went back to the Nytro to help it through. I thought I smelled the belt burning, and then we saw flames under the hood.

If I'd had fire insurance I'd have stood back and watched it go, but I started pulling panels and throwing snow, and yelled for someone to go to the gas station and get a fire extinguisher. A couple of spurts with that and the flames were out, though they flickered back up a minute later and needed another spray.

Wish I could've got some pics. It doesn't look like anything other than the tank was damaged, but it sure did cause some tense moments.

Good thing no one was hurt, that could of been a disaster if you were filling with gas when it started on fire.

If you need the extra gas then it's the best option. In western NY there are few gas stops and most close early. Before the trail tank I had several incidents where I missed making it to a gas station before it closed. I hated asking my ski doo buddies who carried extra fuel for help. Since the trail tank install I have had no issues with running low on fuel and I've had no problems with the tank. My exhaust donuts also disappeared but I caught them yearly before the hot exhaust gases could do any damage.

Would it be ok to wrap the header with exaust wrap?or at least do the top of the pipe?and to be honest I'm not NOT looking forward to pulling that tank off. Again. It's a pain in the ars!
