What makes these so special over the do it yourself one with $15 of parts from the auto parts store.

I'm new here and curious what an evac system is. Please explain.

The evac system people are referring to is connecting the crankcase vent hose to the K+N airfilters supplied in the ECP power-up kit. The idea behind the evac kit is to use the slight amount of vacuum level created on the inside of the air filters to lower the crankcase pressure. The lower the crankcase pressure, the better the piston rings seal therfore reducing blowby across the rings. Race cars and bikes do this by driving a seperate vacuum pump which is connected to the crankcase. This technique is worth measureable horsepower if you can significantly lower the crankase pressure. It is doubtful if it actually works the way everyone has it connected on the RX-1 and nobody has actually measured the amount of vacuum being created by this connection but at least it is venting the oil vapors into the engine rather than al over the engine compartment.
