little o ring in chain case

Put chain case back together and didn't see little o ring when I took it apart, so when I put it back together I put it on before I put chain case cover back on. Noticed ulmers write up and see that it goes on after cover. What does this ring do and does It matter which side ofcover its on

It goes Spacer,Washer,Gear,Washer,Spacer,0-Ring. Cover,Big Spacer with t-bolt, little spacer,caliper, washer,snap ring. Off the top of my head. I did it about 5 times the other night cause i didn't have printer paper from allens write up.

It can go on with the cover on. Just slide it on the shaft before the long spacer with set screw. Basically there is a seal for the outside of that spacer and the o ring seals the inside. The long spacer will push it back in and seat it against the last spacer on the inside.

So It shouldn't matter that I put the seal on before I put the cover on

it's the same either way, it will go into the same place with the cover on or off
