Do you have any automotive machine shops close? Small block chevy valve spring shims will work they come in .015,.030 and .060 hope this info will help.
Yamaha makes them in .020,.040 and .080. You can get the .060 your looking for by using the 2 thinner sizes available through Yamaha...BBY

Are you locking your secondary? When I did mine, I made sure there was only a few thousandths at best pressing on the taper. Seems to work well. Although your 04 has the threaded bearing seat, right?
If you have a shim a little oversize, you could always hold it with a magnetic indicator base (assuming it is magnetic) and grind it on a belt sander. Works in a pinch. Just cool it often. Oh, and you'll need a mic or caliper too..

Are you really saying that 20 thousanths will make a difference in clutch alignment, are you putting us on?

According to the story written by MATT in the TECH section.. YES, getting your clutch perfectly aligned can gain you alot of HP at the track! and save you belt life!

if you read the manual it says clutch offset is 13.5 to 16.5 mm. it then goes on to say set it at 15 mm and allow it to float 1 to 2 mm each way. some say it will not self allign under torque, but the second you let off the gas its no longer under torque and will self allign. if its within these specs then its allways correct. nowhere in my yamaha manual does it say to lock it. this is what the other mnfg.s do with their keyway setup. not exactly the best to float a clutch on. i have never blown a yamaha belt using stock clutches, only had them wear down to the 32.5mm wear limit after many thousands of miles. i ride with ski doo boys all the time and they eat belts often with clutches you could fry an egg on. im not telling anyone how to set up their clutching or trying to start a pissing match with anyone. this is how yamaha says to do it and it works for me.

Grader is right. With the floating secondary, it isn't aligned all the time. I'm sure if it is even 50 thousenths off, it would still be, for all practical purposes, perfectly aligned. There is no way that you could ever measure a difference in performance from a slightly misaligned secondary.

all your horsepower your engine makes its transfered to the track Threw the clutches and belt!!
Read Matts write up before you make up your mind on what is right or worng... Either way will work.. but for those looking to gain every 1/10 of a second in a race.. Locking the secondary may be the key!

i read it and it does make sense. another way to get more (free) power to the track. good find welter. the more you get the planets aligned the faster your rocket will be.
It should also be noted that even though our motors are mounted "solid", they will still move. Black John has mentioned this many times. I saw a post on here where someone made a engine tensioner. Thats the ultimate setup if your going to lock down your secondary. Ill have to look for that post for you Brian...BBY

from my observations on clutching, i think yamaha has one of the most effecient setups going. as we all know, the out of the box setup is meant for the average rider. it can be improved upon for drags, mountains, top speed, etc. but the company sells the sled to everybody. when you read about guys like fred stearns riding his 03 for 10000 mi. and his 04 for almost 13000 mi. and he changed a belt 'just because' then that says something. i believe he just drove those sleds with the factory setup((floating secondary) and studs. ski doos tra came out in what 92 or 93 and they are now up what tra 4 or tra 5?. why so many changes?, first 4 werent quite right? i have a cat buddy that had to rebuild his clutch on his 900 at 2000 mi. 2000 lousy miles and its done. i remember reading dukesters posts last year on maintenance done to their sleds, some of them had both clutches rebuilt twice, not the yamahas, the other brands. so to sum it up, if youve locked your secondary and it works for you, thats great, leave it alone, you dont have to fix what aint broke. on the other hand, yamaha knows more than most of us and what they want us to know they put in the manual.

I'll read it again Welter, but I know I'm right on this one. With all due respect to Matt, you are saying he is right, and the Yamaha engineering dept. is wrong.
The manual says ther can be 4 mm movement side to side. 4mm=160 thousanths. If perfect alignment is so importent, why can't you find the correct spacers.
This reminds me of indexing spark plugs. How many of you do that?
I think blueby made my point. Do you really think the belt is still perfectly aligned under torque?

Guys, I had an elaborate post typed up and just deleted it. Do what you like with your sleds, this has been debated a million times. Tell me why the other 3 manufacturers are locking there secondarys on models that have even more engine movement than ours?...BBY
