I'm looking at an 06' Attak with 1900 miles on it. I've been a 2 stroke guy with a Viper, and an 01' SRX. What should I be looking for as far as any kind of problem areas on this machine?? Is there anything in particular?? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

I have an 2000 SRX and 02 Viper and haven't rode either one since I bought my 06 Attak. Check the rear inside idler wheels for delamination but they have probally been changed with that milage allready. The sliders can wear fast but cheap. If it is a GT check the wires on the rear shock

biggest problem is getting rid of the smile and the woody!

Viperlover, I had two SRX's and a piped Viper (and countless V-Maxes & Exciters) before finally taking a chance on a four stroke last season.

At first I thought I had made a huge mistake. However after dialing in the sled and getting used to how to ride it I would never go back!

Look on the frequently asked questions

1. Change out the handlebars!!! Go to your local dealership and tell them you want the upgraded 07 handlebars. The 06 totally suck for the handwarmers. They don't work. They are pretty cheap about $20 or $30 and you get the whole handlebar assembly. You only need the harness that it comes with. Take the harness off and put it on your sled. This makes the handwarmers in parallel and not in series.

2. Do something with the front skies so they don't dart. There are sooooooo many options I can't list them. Not a big deal.

If you are looking to improve handling and don't care about the hole shot as much. Get a 13mm sway bar from Pioneer and follow their set-up instructions of lowering the front end, taking up the limiter strap and reduce the weight transfer. This will get rid of most inside ski lift. Ask if the chain case cover is an 07 cover. Some of the 06's if run wide open for a long period of time lost chain case oil and blew the chain case. Check to see if it has a rear heat exchanger installed. 06 didn't have a radiator or rear heat exchanger so they would over heat in low snow conditions. Idler wheels were already mentioned.

Keep the bars and do the wiring harness change over found on threads here in the sight. You will have to run them on 1 or 2 bars but they get hot like the old days. I jsut bought an 07 LTX GT and put my 06 bars on. I can rev at 2500 rpms on 3 bars and the bars are warm cannot wait till get to turn 10800 rpms to see how they do. The 07 bars feel different and do not have adjustable hooks on the end.

As I said in the other thread:

I owned two SRX's & a triple piped Viper (along with many other Exciters & V-Max's). I absolutely loved my '02 Viper and held off as long as I could before taking a chance on a 4-stroke.

When I took my first ride on my new '07 Apex GT last year I had huge regrets and seriously considered asking the dealer to trade me back my Viper. I absolutely hated the Apex and thought that I would never be able to ride it like I was able to ride my Viper.

However after taking the time to change practically every suspension setting based on other TY members suggestions, I am very happy now with the Apex. There is also definately a learning curve before you can ride an Apex fast when coming from an "older" Yamaha.

Get the Silverstar Ultra's (they are even better than the standard Silverstar's) literally a "night & day" difference from stock! I also can not say enough good things about the Bergstrom 8" triple points with shims & ski savers.

.

I had 2 yrs and about $2000 invested in my 03 rx-1 untill I was completely happy and could outrun anyone on the trails.

Buy her man you wont miss that viper nor the srx except for the sound boy i miss those tripples. But other than that just read around this website and see all the cool stuff these boys do to their sleds and go from there

good luck!

I own an '06 'Tak after coming off a Viper S after coming off an '01 SRX.
I've done the following to mine & am satisfied w/the results:
Install upgraded '07 handlebar warmers.
Install rear heat exchanger.
Elim. darting w/Woody's Dooly's.
Install studs.
Install med. height windshield.
If your budget allows, Fox Floats are awsome.
Happy trails & welcome.

Thanks to all the people who replied with their suggestions. I picked up an 06 Attak with 906 miles today for $6200. Came with a Y.E.S. warranty until 2/2/2011 also! I'm pretty stoked about this deal. It's bone stock, and I'm going to have the dealer run the VIN and see what has and hasn't been done to it. I'll for sure get the bars taken care of, and go from there I guess.

Awesome sled. I own one (blue :) )

Careful with 'decelaration'. When you release throttle, it brakes. Hard.

I had 50 miles on it, had a huge smile on my face because roads were closed due to glare ice.

Going less than 40 mph, new area, on county road. Just missed the trail, let off gas, and bamm. Went into 360 degree spin. Survived that , but edge caught in next 360. I was on a skating rink, with about 6 inches of fresh snow on tip.

:o|

Oh well, I wanted to change the windshield from small to medium anyways. Broke the brake and steering column as well.

Shoulder hurt like a bugger.

(Tek vest in closet, because I was 'just breaking it in').

Enjoy the awesome ride. But watch out for 'de-celaration'. :yam:
