Making my own Skidplate?

Hit a deer on a sled. Wow. Did you have an extra pair of britches?

Yes.Ashamed of that.I ride alot different around the deer now.If I can see them I just stop till they are gone out of site and enjoy scene or yell at them to get away. This one was running away to side but minute I gave it the gas it turned around and was on me quicker than I could stop. Was alone and on a river so yes I was very scared.

yea i encouter a lot more deers now that im riding a 4 stroke vs my old 2 stroke.

I chased a caribou for about 5 miles. Funny to watch him run with his tough all hanging out and his feet splaying out to the sides. Clumsy beast.

Ruckus I bet if someone chased you for 5 miles in snow on a sled, your toungue would be hanging out also. And I bet you woudn't be that graceful either. :exc:

TIG can be reall pretty, but a good spool gun is way faster and just as good. It is essentially a hand held wirefeed gun that is powered off of you MIG welder. Run pure Argon as your shielding gas and be sure to use the proper alloy of wire for the material you are using. Also take the time to prep your metal. Dirty aluminum is a bear to weld. Scrub it with a stainless steel wire brush, a scotch brite pad and/or acetone. I have even had to bake it in an oven if it had been permiated with oil. When you get to the point of welding it if you have any question just ask.

I have a Lincoln SP100 Mig.I hardly ever use it anymore since getting rid of my old steel framed Banshee and 250r.Works great on thinner steel. But I always wondered if the spool gun /gas setup would work on aluminum well.Have any of you seen this welder used like that?If I know it works I would buy a spool gun and tank for sure.Just sick of bothering my buddies for Tig welding aluminum all the time.

Email Lincoln and they should give you an answer on compatability. As far as wire welding alum, I have used a Miller spoolomatic. As Shoprat said, proper gas and wire selection and it will work fine. Cant stress cleanliness enough. Once you think its clean enough, clean it once more.

I jut called Oxarc, my welding supplier. Brad said that within the last year Lincoln has made a kit that can be installed into the Sp's that allow you to run a 1lb spool gun. The kit installed costs between $50-$100 and the 1lb spool gun cots about $225. Go to your local welding supply store that carries Lincoln products. If you get set up for this let me know how it works.

True, but a caribou has built in snowshoes and can run for hours, I can't. Obviously you have never seen one because that's exactly how they run. Clumsy beasts.

I have one and yes it will due thin aluminum. Use it all the time. Just made a aluminum salt shield. Made many skid plates for the moto boys. The key is stainless steel brush the area to get it clean. Run straight Argon gas only (dont mix) and use the push method not the pull method. And dont use the steel liner get a teflon liner for your gun and keep it straight as possible. Aluminum wire is tough to feed because it is so soft. But the spool gun is the best for aluminum. Hope this helps.

Yes I have seen them run. I just wanted you to stop and think about it first before running animals with your sled. Do you know how they breathe when there runnning? Maybe try chasing "Bigfoot" for 5 miles in snow would be more fun.

You can order one right from Lincoln for 195.00 (spool gun 100 series.) But if you keep checking Ebay I have seen them on there for less.

ya know...maybe not chasing anything but fun with your sled might be a good idea. Sounds like a great way to get off road rigs legislated right out of the game. Many people view those kinds of activities as cruel and harassing to animals - I tend to agree. It's the kind of thing that gives all of us a bad rap...

and we are way off the topic of home spun skid plates

I don't give a rats bum what you guys think. I grew up in the woods and know my way around. Do you think I'm the first thing to chase a caribou? It was too stupid to get off the trail and I needed to get where I was going. Besides, I never saw a trail sticker on it so it had no business being there.

;):D
