- 2003 RX!
I just purchased a 2003 RX1 with 6k miles. I blew a belt on the trail today. The old belt 'strings' melted to the secondary. I tried to remove all fragments and put the replacement belt on. Having been the first time i swapped a belt i was concerned it was too loose and I knew some pieces were pinched I limped home 7 miles.
The secondary was open when i replaced the belt and quite closed when i got home. Some strings are pinched and the secondary will not open up.
I want to get the secondary to spread wide so i can get the strings from the old belt out.
I've seen video's of people rotating the helix, which i'm not able to do. Is there something wrong?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Remove the drive belt and take the helix out of the secondary. Be careful and hold pressure on the helix when removing the 3 nuts, as this will release the spring. Wear gloves in case it gets away from you. (Take note of the spring position before disassembly) This will allow you to open the sheaves by hand and clean out debris. I would also make sure there are no belt pieces wrapped around the shaft behind the secondary. You don't want to ruin that bearing!
You'll have to rewind the spring upon reassembly. Don't fret, it's not bad once you see how it's done. The link below is a video showing the installation of a clutch kit. Included in the video is a "how-to" on winding the secondary spring. I would recommend watching the video before any disassembly.
Good luck! Everything I know about a Yamaha came from this website.
