I closed the rear tunnell on my 07 phazer and mounted the phazer side saddle bags on the side. This past weekend rode 400 miles in the UP, Temp was 28 to 31 degrees, The fenders got hot enough to melt and drip onto the tunnell. The bags end up laying against the fenders. I was going to try and make some aluminum braces to go up off the tunnell to create an air gap, Any other Ideas???? This happened last year too but I was riding in 45 degree weather. I always wrap my clothes in plastic bags so they don't get wet, the plastic bags got hot enough on the inside to melt the bags to my clothes
boy did that suck. Ruined my clothes. This time I put a whole newspaper on the inside of the bags which provided enough insulation not to melt the plastic bags.

what you could do is bend sheet metal that bolts on the same spots as the fenders and is similar to the fenders. Leave an air gap so the metal takes the heat and this will sheild the fenders from the heat and give you some support...

Are you using the Yamaha heat shield?

the yamaha heat shielding only covers the area between the seat and exhaust the fenders are pressed closer to exhaust due to saddle bags and cause melting. I found that some of Skinz heat mesh tape type stuff on the inside of my fenders kept mine from melting during breif contact with the muffler this tape may also help you with heat reflectieveness...

The factory tunnel closure kit has an aluminum piece that prevents that.

The heat shielding I got with my kit is much more extensive than that. It covers both side panels (fenders?) all the way down and creates air space for cooling. That is why I bought the proper kit rather than slap a piece of aluminum over the hole.
Does anyone have a picture of the heat shielding that comes with the yamaha kit?? thanks

Here you go.The kit is worth it.

Yup, worth it. The two "ears" on the part to the left protect the rear fenders well.

When I closed the of the tunnel I noticed the plastic became quite soft and warm enough you could smell it at times. The local auto parts guy stocked and recommended this stuff;

I covered the inside of the plastic with a single layer. Took about 2/3 of the small roll.
It worked very well. The the plastic is cool to the touch now and the adhesive seems to hold up well.
