The cordless drils are in the 1300-1700rpm range and my corded drill is rated at 2700 rpm- that's likely your problem. Borrow one and see if it makes a difference. Also, the bigger diameter buffers will have more surface speed.

I purchased the Buschs aluminum polish that was recommended earlier. Awsome stuff !! I dont even use the white , brown,black paste that came with polishing kit. I did both my sleds and didnt take that long. Wool pad on a variable speed automotive buffer works best for me followed by a cotton bonnet for final pass. I only use the polishing wheels from the kit for hard to reach places.
