As many of you know my Warrior is running hot enough to have melted the soles on my boots each time out.

Several of us have the same issue and were under the impression that the new rear exchanger Y came out with for the Mountain would fit the Warrior and might solve the problem.

VT-BluYamaha54 talked to his dealer and they said no way.

I was impatient for a reply from Yamaha and ordered the part which came in quickly.

Yesterday dealer and I contacted a Y service rep in Toronto regarding
his thoughts.

He said that you could install it with some modifications but he was worried
about clearance issues especially since I have studs. He recommended against the install and insists that I should not need it. In fairness to Y this does not appear to be a widespread problem and my hot light has not come on. [Boots are looking really funny though]

Not being one to accept everything I hear I had to go see for myself. I went to the dealer this morning and had a close look at the exchanger and a Warrior they had on display.

My opinion is that the Y service guy in TO is correct. It could be made to fit but it would not be easy. Tunnel extension on Warrior tips down and it is straight out the back on the Mountain. Therefore coolant pipes on exchanger would not be the correct angle. Mountain had long drop down brackets for the skid, Warrior's are shorter. I think there would definately be a clearance issue. Tunnel protectors on Warrior would have to be shortened and then some other type of protection fabricated & installed.

Sorry to say guys IMHO this Mountain rear exchanger is not a solution.

Perhaps Waterwetter & or Synthetic oil will help some.

Going to post a query on these.

Have great weekend sledding. Rain coming to the East next week. :(

Turbo Turtle told me to take the thermastat out and drill more bypass holes in the rim..as many as you can get in...I might give that a try.

Tom,

Do you know the degree spec for opening on the thermostat?

Not sure the drilling would help "my" issue. My problem seems more to be hot exchangers as opposed to a hot engine.

However your post triggers a thought that I had not previously considered.

Perhaps the few of us that are having this problem have thermostats that are stuck open.

Seems like a possibility since the issue does not appear to be wide spread.

Any thoughts?

Riceburner: A friend had the same problem. We found that the front exchanger wasn't getting proper collant circulation. The dealer bled the system several times with no success.

We warmed the machine up and drove it up against a snow bank with the sled raised to a 45 degree angle. We then removed the collant filler cap and let it run until the light came on. We added about a cup of collant and then replaced the cap and drove it.

We repeated the sequence again with the same results. The sled no longer has the problem. The system had an air lock.

I hope this helps.

On another thread someone suggested trying to bleed air from the cooling system again. May be worth a try. It takes maybe three minutes.

The key point is to park the sled up a steep incline and open the cap on the coolant fill reservior slowly while the machine is idling. Let it run for a few minutes -

We usually do this in the parking lot on tilt trailers or ramps - before the motors get too warm.

Dan and TMK50,

Thanks for the replies.

I figured no airlock since both running board exchangers were very hot.

Never thought to check the tunnel cooler Dan. Thanks for the tip. I figured if the running board ones were working that the tunnel one was as well. Seems you discovered that was not necessarily the case.

Will do the TMK 50 method tomorrow before the ride and do Dans after the ride just so I do not hold the troops up in the AM.

I see in Misfits 2 stroke thread that Dan mentioned 165 degrees several times, so I guess that is the heat level the thermostat opens.

Man I like this site.

I have had reports of bad thermosats....but some of it was do to ice racing anf overheating to the point of shut down ...then the stat would get stuck.

I am deeply appreciative for all the recent posts here on this issue of overheating Warriors! Just continues to show that the people here are THE BEST!
Since we now know that the RX-Mtn exchanger won't work, Yamaha needs to revisit this and (hopefully) come thru with an exchanger that WILL work.
I agree with the suggestion to be sure air is purged because that helped mine quite allot but I am not confident that this sled has adequate cooling capacity for 'Spring Riding' here in the East.

I am headed to Quebec for a week and will report when I return. The forcast is for daytime temps in the 30's so it should be a good measurement.

Sounds like you have air in the system. This happened to me also. You must repeat the bleed-off procedure several times to completely purge the system. Don't give up on this. Keep trying and you should remedy your problem !!

VT_BluYamaha54 there has got to be something going on with your sled,I have 2200 miles on my Warrior in Vermont and I have not had the temp light come on yet.
Put on 180 miles around the camel hump area friday without any problems.

Well, I may indeed have something wrong but it has been to the dealer multiple times and they found NOTHING. I consider myself pretty sharp mechanically and I'm ready to throw in the towel - partly in frustration and partly due to the fact that this defies common mechanical sense.

I just spent a week in Canada and had the only sled that had overheating problems in what could only be described as 'normal' conditions. As reported by RICEBURNER about the heat in the running boards, they got hot enough to melt my boots too. It will sit at the dealer until someone finds something. The problem now is the season is pretty much over so no one will be able to test whatever is done to prove it is "Fixed"

I spoke with the Yamaha rep at the Toronto snowmobile show
yesterday about my overheating problem. I told him I was going to
install the mountain heat exchanger & he told me that it should cure my problem & further advised that the 05's had the problem cured.
In prior conversations at other shows the rep's wouldn't admit there was a problem.
I also asked about my speedo/tach gauge frosting over & he gave me the same advise about the rubber wiring boot on the back not being secured
properly but if that doesnt work your dealer will replace the unit (if you have previously advised them of the problem.)

BJRB,

Did you talk to a "Tech" rep or a "Sales" rep?

Did this rep say the Mountain exchanger would be a bolt in or require
some work. What did he say re clearance issues with the track.
[especially studded]

Will you need to lower the rear skid to be like the Mountains?

See my post at the start of this thread re conversation with a Tech rep and my own investigation.

I am not aware of anyone putting this exchanger on a Warrior. Was the rep aware of any or are you.

What is the fix that they have done for 05 for this issue? What exactly is the problem?

Did you get his name and a phone # ?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for your time.

Hey don't know if you tried to burp your sled yet but wanted to let you know. I just pnched 4 holes in the front exchanger, the track is throwing studs at 3,000 miles. You have to elevate the rear of the sled, let it run until hot and burp the rear bleader under the fascia trim. You may have to open the cap on the overflow container to get it to burp. I did mine 2 weeks ago after fixing the stud holes and re-filled the entire cooling system and burped 3 times. I went out and ran 500 miles in 1 weekend in 30 deg+ weather with no overheating.

I have a RX1 Mountain, and before the cooler came out everyone was telling me to put on ice scratchers. My sled over heated every time I rode. I installed a set from Mountain Performace. What a differance it made, not only did my engine run cooler, but my slides lasted 10-15 times longer. After installing the cooler I left the ice scratchers in place. You really don't know that they are on.
I also was told that the cooler would fit a Warrior. I was at Yamaha's show in Grand Rapids last Wed. nite. The Warrior dosn't have any extra cooling by the looks of it to me. They didn't have a Mountain sled there, so I can't say about them either. I was dissapointed because I wanted to look at the new Mountain skies. By the pictures the look like they might work in deep snow.
