Ok I know this is childish for a 37yr old but i'm trying to out drag race my buddies 07 Doo Renegade 800. Believe it or not I pull him by 3-5 out of the hole and maintain the first 1/8 mile or so then he runs me down and we finish neck and neck at the quarter with him pulling me after that. He is about 240lbs while I am 220lbs. I'm looking for a bit more top end in the 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile range if it's possible.
This is what i'm packing for heat...2009 RTX with Excell header, MPI slip on silencer, NGK CR10EK's, K&N kit, PC III w/Ulmer's mapping, 96 Woody's studs, 60/40 93pump fuel/108VP race fuel...
With these mods I believe I'm somewhere around 150hp or so which I think the stock 800 Doo is as well...He is stock with the exception of clutch.
Is it a lost cause? Will the 07 Doo Doo always run me down? Is there something else I can do other than Turbo, Supercharge, or NOS?
Should I look into clutching/gearing/etc? Don't want to substitue top end speed for bottom end pull if possible...Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

i beleive you would be geared alot lower thats why you run out of top end, gear up a little and see what happens.

First off, his sled is more like 140 hp, not 150. I would work on clutching first. Some Rev 800's run good, I had one myself. What are you seeing for speeds at the 1/4 mile mark ? My 800 Rev used to hit an indicated 188 km/hr top end on a long stretch, where my FX Nytro can't break 170. My FX Nytro gets there quicker, but I found the Rev was faster. You might be SOL for long hauls, but clutching should increase the gap in the quarter so that he doesn't catch you. Last resort, let off the gas before he catches up, and say the race was over, win win

You have power add ons, but you have no clutching to compliment the power. You need to get the new power to the ground. You need to gear it up on tooth and get some Ulmer Clutching or drag&fly's.....
He also has a gade, so he will accelerate better than you, but I believe the clutching and gearing will fix that...

1/4 mile speeds have been right around 172/174km/hr...What i'm hearing from all of you is it's time for another call to Ulmer for some clutching...
I guess it's only $$$ and it costs lots of it to play

why are you running a premium/race fuel mix? higher octane in a motor that cant use it equals less power.

That's a good point regarding the fuel but here is my thought behind it. The pump fuel being produced today seems to be pretty crappy and lacks consistency and cleanliness. I am concerned with getting good clean fuel to my engine and not so concerned about the higher octane.
Do you think I'm wasting dollars with that logic? I have done it this way for my fourstroke motocross bikes for years and thought the same logic would apply itself to the sled...Please tell me if I'm wrong though?

You are blowing money out the window. All of the testing on your mods is used with 87 octane. (It may only 84-85, but don't sweat it, you will not hurt it. It was tested to run on 87 pump fuel.. You are losing power by running premium or greater... if you do not run the Ignition controller , you do not have to run the Premium... Run 87 and that's it.... Then like I said clutch and gear it and your 800 will not be much of a challenge..

i understand the clean fuel thinking and its good, but octane controls burn rate, and motors designed to run on 87 run best on 87. now if your ignition and timing mods require higher octane eg. 91 or 93, then for sure use it, but you mention ulmers mapping and unless he told you otherwise, premium should be fine. contact him to verify your fuel requirements with your mods. as for your racing, the renagade is very close to a stock nytro hp wise... 138 to 140. with the mods you should have more. talk to ulmer about overdrive mods for the clutches to gain more top end before changing gearing.

awesome guys...keep it coming...I'll call Allen this afternoon regarding fuel and clutch work.
Allen never told me to run the premium fuel I just did it from habbit/experience with my race bikes. I had no idea that the Nytro runs better with 87 than 93 etc...

With 4 strokes its not the octane level you are concerned with you need oxygenated fuel to see any improvements. Race fuel with pump fuel creates less power not better fuel

once you get things squared away, take a vid of you destroying the doo and post for the rest of us to enjoy! Sounds to me like it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when".

The guy he is racing has a 121" Gade... It would have very good accleration being a long track and after amrkety clutching... Top end on the gade not so much.. He would benefit more from gearing then OD the clutches... The problem really is in the stock helix.. Unless he goes after market or machines the stock one, then the helix would really hold it back on top end. Ulmer told me on a 121", Gearing is said to help as much as 3-4 mph on top end, plus the clutching would help alot in accleration, since the Nytro is famous for slipping the belt alot out of the hole.....

Sled Freak...Right on...I think Allen will lead me towards stage II that has clutching and gearing.
I still had no idea that premium fuel (pump/race/mixed) would generate less power...That baffles me as I've always noticed HP gains in my 4 stroke MX race bikes.
I'm out of touch I guess

your MX race bikes have big compression and need that exrta octane so they don't ping. The nytro motor doesn't have the compression for that high of octane
