I just bought a brand new 2011 Apex 128. Been riding a 02 Viper, but the group I ride with already has a Apex 128 and an Apex XTX. So, I was just trying to keep up. We ride in the UP - Grand Marias area so there is a mix of open trails and woods. I am new to this site and was reading up on the modifications. From what I can tell, people have been happy with the power commander, ram air & Ulmer clutch set up and changing gearing. I can't do all of these, however maybe one or two. I want to beat my buddies on their stock sleds on top end, and still stay with them on the twisty trails.

If you had to pick one (maybe two) of the mods above, what would it be if I wanted the best bang for the buck? I want to make everything appear stock.

as lean as these sleds run especially on top i would go for the ram air and power commander

Agreed on the Power commander. Most important thing is to get a few thousand miles on the sled to brake in the engine. Mine picked up about 600 rpm at 2000 miles.

What he said!

I would clutch first. Probably Ulmer. Make sure you tell him you plan to add a PC 5 and air box mod at a later date and want to know how to change clutching when you get those pieces.

Clutching will get you more in a drag race.

Besides that, if you do the other first you will be clutched incorrectly for the extra power.

running dnf 2 speeds and ram air with pcv. cant touch me, the biggest reason is clutching, get it on the money and youre laughing

Can't say for sure mine is factory stock.

The 11's are darn good outa the box.

I have no problem with E-tecs and other 800's in a race over 500 feet.

Save your money and do all 3 ~ they go hand and hand. More air needs more fuel to make hp and clutching is needed to put it the the trail. One of these are not as affective as all three together IMHO. Get Ulmer stuff as he has did all the homework...

Thanks for all of your input. I'll give ulmer a call and start my plan of attack.

"Have the engines changed that much? I think the durability is about the same."

my comment was referring too you having that many miles becasue you had snow in the past 2 years to actually ride it that much. i've only got 3200 miles on mine but i only purchased it back last November and we didn't have any snow in this area.

as for reliability i think that's a no brainer, nothing is more reliable out there then these Yamaha 4-strokes. ;)!
