And still it beats the Yamaha engine in every aspect. Except the 40hp difference. I don`t give s... what its made from, it performs perfect. Even with 170hp! Thats more than we can say about the Yamaha engine. They have lost it totally putting firstly a cheap ECU and then crappy internal parts. They are going backwards and its embarrassing.
Ski-Doo is adding Magnesium to lighten the sled. Yamaha is removing their Magnesium. For what ? `gain weight and save money` ??

The 850 etec is a lot to do about nothing but marketing. Under real conditions it only adds 3-5 hp, still generating less than the other 800's. Ski-Doo claims 10hp, but then read the fine print (under optimal conditions for a 2-stroke). The ski-doo guys are not happy. Doo says the 800 is 155hp, making the new 850 etec still less than 160hp on the trail. IMO Yamaha does not need to even try to compare to that development, it's practically meaningless in the real world!

Anyone claiming Ski Doo makes a better 4 stroke or any one of their engines what have you ,evidently has very little or no experience in the engine industry whatsoever.Hands down Yamaha 4 stroke engines are tried ,trued and tested to be the best in the business.Toyota race engines are designed and made by Yamaha for a good reason.Their tolerances and material, engineering are a science they mastered. If you are not satisfied, disassemble both engines ,examine all components of both side by side,if you cannot see for your self without someone to explaining the difference of a quality built engine vs.a throw away( BRP) I would advise you not to brag or bash. There was a full article written by one of the magazine's not to long ago about the comparison of the two explaining the pros and cons of the BRP 4 stroke vs Yamaha 4.Very informative and educational .To simplify it,Yamaha engines are heads and tails by far a much more superior engine.Don't judge a book by it's cover, its contents are what tells the story. They are not the leader in 4 stroke technology because they look pretty.Their the leaders because they have top notch engineers with Experience in the field of racing.

I have had this conversation with the owner of OSP that does all the turbo drag sleds at Haydays. There is no question which motor can take the most boost without major engine mods internally. Why do you think the Yamaha's dominate that turbo class with a heavily boosted Apex motor in a drag chassis? Not sure of late but three years ago when the Viper was being previewed at the Yamaha showing in Minneapolis he said he was pulling more than 700 HP out of his Apex motors in a short run. Over 100 HP more than he could safely get out of the Doo 1200 or the Cat 1100.

I've ridden both the 1200 and the 900 doo and they are decent motors. The one thing I can't get past is the delay on the throttle that both engines have. The 900 is pretty noticeable, the 1200 is atrocious. The old guy in our group has the 1200 and it drives me crazy when I put it in his trailer for him. You bump the throttle, it fully returns, then the sled lurches forward. I don't know how anyone can drive those things.

No way around it with long intake neck. They only have one throttle body too. Let's not forget who built and designed this motor, McLaren. The long intake track had to happen to properly fit motor's proper center of gravity to the sled. Now with new Gen 4 chassis word is the 1200 will not fit. The guys on Dootalk that are on the 4s side are mad that they don't do much with this engine package calling it the red headed stepchild of the Doo line.I've ridden both the 1200 and the 900 doo and they are decent motors. They Doo website must be wrong then as they show electric start as being standard on the MXZ and Renegade 850's.Not this year. Gotta elect ES if you want it. Adds weight AND $$$!

Does it really matter? Truth is, the chassis that these motors sit it typically fall apart long before the motors. I sold my apex with 13,000 miles and I had loose tunnel rivets, a whole new exhaust cause the original fell apart, and new floor board radiators cause the originals cracked.
My Dad lost compression in 2 cylinders on his 2007 Attak Gt at 17,000 miles. He bought it new and it had nothing but the best trails and maintenance.
