So what good are hand signals? Its the guy in front thats the biggest threat, once hes gone by youre on your toes waiting for the next one.
correct you are waiting for the next one. but how do you know there is a next one or how many more with out a signal.
this is just getting stupid. i am done with it.
i think the light and hand signals are a great idea

Thanks for taking some of the heat off me. The snowmobile safety instructors that I've heard, agree with us, because of the safety facter, of riding with one hand on the bars.

2 weeks ago I got hit once on Saturday and once on Sunday in broad daylight by leaders of groups. Both were in a tight corner and were trying to decide how to slow down, stay on their side and to signal there was more idiots coming. I don't need anyone to tell me there is more coming, I drive like there is always someone comming & never enter a corner that I cant see the back side of faster than I can negotiate and pass on. For those that need this I suggest they stop prior to the corner walk up and wave the rest of the group through and then join the pack in the rear. At least that way everyone gets a chance to lead.

This topic makes me laugh every time it comes up! Signals are for safety and common courtesy to other sledders. I can't believe someone can attempt to compare it to driving a vehicle...LMFAO!!! No offence, that's just stupid!
I can understand a new driver not giving signs, most cases they should not be leading anyway. If you can not signal because you're going too fast, guess what, slow the f$#% down. These are groomed trails not race tracks.
I bet most of the people registered here consider themselves good drivers. I would also bet that the majority of you drive too fast, don't stay on the right side of the trails and don't signal!!

Signals are a courtesy to others but there is a right and a wrong time to use them. Meaning if your going into a curve too fast don't take your hands off the bars to signal ya might just hit somebody. The benefit to the light is it allows you to maintain as much control of the sled as possible and also let's the guy your passing know someones behind you. Everyone that has seen mine thought the idea was great now if they can get the price down a little more i really believe this could become standard equipment on not just sled's but ATV's also. Yesterday, I was on a railroad grade to Marquette Mich. You could see at least 2 miles in each direction. When the approaching 2 sleds got close (guess how I knew there were 2), they slowed to about 10mph. The man raised one finger. The wife 10 feet behind him (guess how I knew she was 10 feet behind him) raised a fist.
Now for the question. How was that showing common courtesy? No offense, but I would call it common stupidity.

A clue is that I saw similar talk on a C5 Corvette forum that I used to visit. There were grown men, mostly professional men that were furious because another Corvette driver didn't return their wave.

Coming towards Houghton/Hancock, I came upon some riders on the trail. There were 2 Ski-doos, an Arctic Cat, and a Polaris. Now, when I passed them, the last guy looked behind him, and there was no signal, and after I passed them, I could see ahead of me, and the trail was clear, so I tromped on the throttle. I was really enjoying the speed, when the rest of his buddies came out from doing off-trail, and right in front of me! I missed the 1st guy by inches, and when I pulled over, the rest of his pack came back. Now if they would have let me know, I would have not got on it the way I did, untill I saw the rest of his group.
Anyone who follows me, knows I use hand signals way more than I should, but I do it in respect for others. To let the guy behind me know there is a problem on the trail, or a turn, or just slowing down, makes it less likely that I will get a sled rammed into me.
Now that is O.K., cause they used the hand signals.

Because of a signal from a stranger, you changed your riding style.
Like someone already stated. Use caution, and common sense. You don't turn around, and look behind you when a sled is approaching. You don't take of at a high rate of speed, because another person says it's clear. You keep both hands on the bars, and drive as if there is another sled around the corner, no matter what you are told.
A friend was telling a WW2 story, about being on a Destroyer in the Pacific. There was a sailer that had exceptional eye sight. Everyone depended on his "friendly" or "enemy". He said a plane approached, the sailer shouted "friendly", and that friendly SOB dropped a 500# bomb near us. After that, every eye on the ship was looking at an approaching plane.

Here's my answer to your question!! Sometimes I do not know exactly where my driving buddies are when I pass oncoming traffic. Most times, especially on straight sections of trails , I try to focus on the trails ahead and not my friends behind me (since I usually speed up on the straights).
Your opinion would be correct if everybody knew exactly where there driving buds are at the exact time you meet oncoming traffic. If this is the case, please let all of us know your secrets..... you could save alot of lives!

You know what even though countless amount of people have died due to DUI on sleds there is still some people who think they should be allowed to have a beer and operate a sled. Zero tolerance is the only safe way and these lights on your sleds with the amber and green are the only safe way. Apex yooper the only thing I agree with you on is that yes you should always ride like there is going to be someone around the corner you are taking and that there is a good chance wildlife could be there also. Signal lights are a good thing and see nothing wrong with them. The hand signals are dangerous and confusing.

LOL... good stuff here, always makes me laugh. Put me down for "caution" signals, but no silly "number" signals.
