Hi folks. I've been lurking on here for a bit, and have a couple of questions. Have been out of sledding for years, but bought an Ovation just before Christmas so the kids would get a feel for it. That led to buying a Bravo to break trails and trim back trees on old wood paths.
I bought Yamahas because all of my buddy's said you can't beat them for reliability.
Now less than a month later my wife is thinking 4 stroke may be better for her asthma
So I have thought the Venture Lite/ Multi Purpose were neat machines, but the boys are saying they are hard to start in the cold, hard to get into reverse, and the tunnels freeze badly.
Have these problems been over come, did they ever exist, or do I just stay with the "Old Iron"

Hi and welcome! You might want to add your location to your profile. It's a site requirement and nice to know.
The first year (2007) had cold weather starting issues but were addressed in later years and an update for the '07 if it was done prior to the special warranty expiring in Dec. 2009. You could replace the ECU. There is also the problem with frozen relays in very cold weather but there is a new solid state relay to replace them. Of most concern are the fuel pump and load control relays. The part number is 8GN-81950-00-00.
Reverse problems have always existed especially on the '07. There is an updated belt and secondary clutch shim to remedy this. At worse, you might have to either rock the sled or get off and lift the rear to get it to engage.
Tunnel freezing (aka: ice boogers) occurs when snow hits the hot muffler vaporizing the water and instantly refreezing in the tunnel in cold weather. Some things can be done but require a fair bit of modifications. Check BombaPolaYama's muffler tunnel cover mod. I live with it, no big deal for me.
Oh, and your wife's asthma won't be helped unless she's in front. I've had burning eyes following the smokers.

X2 on that. You do not notice it until you get stuck behind some smokers out on the trail. My brother noticed it on the weekend on his 4 stroke venture.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess I'll pass on the 07 I saw as the owner was dodging when I asked him if he had the dealer doo any serving of the machine.

Just because it wasn't updated, doesn't mean it's not a good machine. Recalls never expire and most of the tech bulletins will cover the expense of fixing it. The only real big one that is expired is the cold weather update but you can do that one yourself by finding an ECU from a later year. And unless you get a lot of below -20C, it's not always needed. Some have said that they actually didn't like it after the update and switched back the ECU.
It's your call though. Maybe it was never serviced, which would mean not maintained but then he might just be doing it himself. Also depends on the price, mileage, condition, etc.

I owned an 07 venture lite. Still kicking myself for selling it last fall. You can still take it to your dealer for any updates. They are supposed to mark the tunnel when dealer does and update and I believe you can tell from where the marks are what updates have been performed.
U will not be disappointed w a venture lite.

The machine is in Nfld. I was going to have a buddy go to it for a run and check it out, but the owner seems to be weird over someone else looking at the machine.
Oh well the little Bravo was great yesterday breaking trail in 30 cm of powder. I may pick up another one for the kids.
I'll go for a rip on the Ovation today.
If the right deal in the right place comes up I'll feel a little better knowing what to look for. Thank guys.

Eh, he (the seller) doesn't have to know unless you decide to buy.willyswagon said:The machine is in Nfld. I was going to have a buddy go to it for a run and check it out, but the owner seems to be weird over someone else looking at the machine.

I'm going to have to go try one out before I make up my mind on one.
Went for a rip with a buddy last night. Tried his Polaris 550 fan Shift. I like the almost stand up style of riding. I spend 90% of my time on the Bravo and Ovation with at least one knee on the seat.
He was amazed that the "Old Ovation" went everywhere he did, and it didn't get stuck.
I may make the 2 1/2 hr trip to the nearest Yammy dealer to see how a Lite or MP feels.
Is there that much of a difference in the ride and floatation of the MP over a Lite?

Mp had wider skis than the lite but that is easy to repair by throwing a set of mountain skis on if you need more floatation on the front.

Yes definitely need to upgrade the skis on the VL for flotation. I think the MP may have better shocks as well. Good idea to try one before buying. BTW, the seating position on these sleds is really good - better than my TF.

Here are the differences between the VL and MP:

I recently purchased a 2007 Multi-Purpose second hand (but very well cared for) and am happy with it. I'm in the Yukon so we definitely have some cold weather and I haven't had any problems starting it but I plug it in a couple hours before starting it. I do find that the center of gravity is higher than I am used to so it can feel a little tippier.....especially side hilling on the opposite side of the throttle.
Unfortunately mine is currently stuck on a trial with a brake issue which I would appreciate some advice/help with but will start a new thread rather than hijack this one with my questions. The problems this surely not a systemic MP problem....at least I truly hope.

What kind of heater is on yours? Where is it located? Others have been wondering about it.

Thanks for your help guys, but I ended up buying a 08 Phazer MTX. So I'll jump over there and ask if any of them know what might be causing a thumping in the left running board at low speed (10-15 kph).
