Flooded? Crack the throttle to start it if this happens again.

very strange issue today. Came out in the morning, started sled on the trailer. I waited for the warmup then pulled off the trailer and parked in front of the room. It's about minus 10. Finished getting dressed and came out to ride. Turn the key, and the dash doesn't come on. Key off then on and no change. Turn the key and the engine turns over but won't fire up. Key off and on and no change. Still turns over but won't start. I turned the safety switch on and off too. I thought it's a fuse, but it's too cold to work on it. So I rode the other sled all day. When we get back it's minus 5. I decide to try it again. Key in, dash lights up and engine starts right up. I'm baffled. No codes or lights on the dash.
Anyone have an issue like this? Is it just a one time thing, or do I need to go back to the dealer for a checkup? It's a 2015 LTX DX. Could it be a frozen relay of some sort?
Thanks for this thread SounderMN. I had the exact same issue as you Sunday morning. It started fine in the trailer and I moved it across the parking lot. 10 minutes later, no start, no fuel pump, no gauges. I didn't have a hair dryer so I removed the hood, pulled out the relays, warmed them in my hotel room, reinstalled and it fired right up. Too bad they didn't at least mount the relay/fuse box where it was more accessible. Removing the hood at the side of a lake in -23 C temps was no fun at all.
I made a sticker for fuse box cover that tells what each fuse is for. Will add the relays. With a note of what they are you can get at them without removing hood. Not fun but doable.
So none are solid state relays?

Is there any option to put in better relays?
I don't think so. They are different than the yamaha ones that now are solid state. Maybe these are solid state. I will buy one and see.

That's interesting. How did you warm the relays? I'll report mine so they know.
Back in the Nytro days I was told to pee on them, a Nytro yes but not peeing on my Viper!

That is a great idea for when there is no hair dryer heat gun option
That would work. Kid uses one on phone to keep it warm.

Funny I just had my dealer call for the same problem and they told him I was the first with that issue. I also called their customer service and was also told this was the first they heard of it. I find this really weird and wish that Yamaha would get their act together and just fix the issue!yep mine did the same!!!! i warmed up relays and started right away,, my dealer said they checked and called Yamaha and said mine be the first with a relay problem

This is a huge and very widespread problem. Don't let your dealer or Yamaha tell you its the "first" one. It happens all the time and requires a fix (along with the starter issue). My dealer has had a half dozen failures reported and I have just sent Yamaha Canada a request for a fix. They of course will not likely willingly admit to a problem because it would require a warranty recall that will be very expensive. But it will be on record and in this Province you can elevate the matter if necessary to a government agency. I'll give them a chance to respond first, but we are starting to catalogue owners with the issue.

How cold is it when you are having these relay problems?? It was -35C here this weekend and fired right up. I know I had a relay problem with my Rhino and the fuel pump not engaging but changed out the relay to one used on a Nytro and never looked back.

It was -23C when I had my problem. It did start when I removed it from the trailer. It wouldn't start again 10 minutes later.

It was -32C in Ville Marie with an added wind chill. The sled started no problem and then quit on the trail about 50 k's out just past La Tulippe. Towed to La Tulippe Shell, warmed up for 15 minutes, and away it went and ran good for next 700 k's. But ..... when and where will it happen again?
