Totally Blue,
I think your hearing the gear reduction, thats normal when at idle
as soon as you rev up it goes away? Also make sure your carbs are
sync this will help reduce at idle.

Are these tower sliders something that was added to the 04's, or 05's? Didn't they have them on the 03's?

Isin't the sound cool it reminds me of the rattle of a dry clutch system on a bike.

Why are we talking about the clutch sliders, when the noise is the gear reduction?
The noise is on brand new sleds, and I believe that it gets loader with more mileage. Of coarse there is the post on this site that said synthetic oil will make the engine so quiet you can't hear it running.

You guys jump on jtsrx too soon. ..I know all about the reduction gear rattle(worse on 03's)...but there are some 05 rx-1 and vectors out there that start to rattle quite loud after only about 100 miles. It is exactly what he says....You need to pull the spider and shim out those plastic sliding buttons.
The button clearance was too loose from the factory on some of them, and after only a few trips on a new sled they distinctly started to rattle louder than normal, and you could even see the moveable vibrate while idling in perfect sync with the noise. There were many 05 vectors with this...it is simple to fix..no biggy. Many dealers are well aware of this.

clutch rattle
these sliders can be shimed out and made tite wit just a rubber O ring but if you trun the idel up a little and get your carbs balenced it will reduced the noise a lot. the 03 have stright cut gears in the gear reduction all other,s have angle cut gears to cut down the gear sound ie rattle

IF in fact it is a primary clutch rattle due to excess side clearance at the sliders, the best fix comes in the form of a spacer than Yamaha supplies. The primary needs to be removed and broken down to install them. Install one spacer per spider post under the drive (force) side slider.

Chance I think you are right. That is exactly where the noise comes from.
Is this dealer repair? or is it something that can be done by me?
Thank God for newbies

You'd have to decide whether or not you are capable of doing it. First off you'd need a clutch puller to remove the primary clutch. Secondly you'd need a stationary sheave holder and a grunt tool to break down the clutch. I do my own and its not difficult with the proper tools. Be sure to use loctite upon reassembly of the clutch if you try it yourself.

I have an 05 "diesel" Vector, 3000 miles. When I look at the parts diagram from above... my, parts 8,9 and 10 seem to be all in one? Just a roller.
I have shimmed the bolt that goes thru, on the outside next to the nut, and it quieted a bit. I can still rattle the roller on the sleeve, though.
My question is... does the shim go "inside" with the roller or "outside" with the nut? ... or is my "roller" beat?
