I was looking at a 40th ann. mtx tonight and when I grab the secondary and try to move it back and forth, without turning the driveshaft, there is a lot more movement than on a non-reverse model. Is this because of the reverse contraption inside the chaincase? It also had the broken lower gear bolt like I've read alot about.

Yes, about 2-3in back and forth is normal.

Where exactly is this bolt? Is it within the chaincase? I'm guessing I have to take the chaincase apart to check it?

Thanks

After reading through the thread over on snowest, it appears to be the bottom gear bolt. And yes, you would have to take the cover off the chaincase to check it.

I found mine to be broken as well. Sheared off about two threads into the shaft. My dealer hd none in stock or even a part number. I replaced it with a slightly shorter bolt as it was all I could find.

I took my chaincase cover off last night, and my bolt was broken as well. I have just over 1600 km, and from the "polished" appearance of the end of the bolt and the markings on the magnesium cover, I would guess that the break happened quite some time ago.
