I would not use the offset timing keys to advance the ignition. The offset on the key causes the key to lose strength since the cross section area of the key is reduced. The more the advance, the weaker the key. The key is there for a reason: to stop the flywheel from turning relative to the crankshaft. Slotting the ignition pickup sensor is going to be the most reliable way of advancing the ignition. The sensor is probably expensive so be careful when sloting the screw holes!!!

Ok, I think I can handle this. Which way do you move the sensor? Toward the front of the sled or the rear?
Freddie if you'd sell some turned down allen head bolts along with the trimming of the sensor I think I may be sending my sensor your way.
Thanks to both of you for the instructions.

You would have to move it towards the front of the sled.
Easiest way to remember is,if you look at the picture you can see where the plastic protrudes from the pickup coil right next to the allen that is turned down.If you were to move it the WRONG WAY you wouldnt need the allen turned down because there would be nothing in the way.

Ok, I'm ready to do this modification.
Is the gasket needed part number 8FA-15461-00-00 ?
Is there a part number for a small tube of Yamabond?

If you got the gasket you wont need the yamabond,I just used it because I didnt have a new gasket.
Ideally I should have ordered the gasket first.

Thanks Steve. Is that the right part number? I ordered it so I sure hope it is the right one.

Any idea how many degrees this advances you? I just bought my key from Hauck. They sell the 3 and 4 degree keys. I was told by them to buy the 3 degree for trail riding, he said the 4 degree might be a little too much. The reason I ask is because I'm considering going this route instead of installing my key.

Didn't the gentleman on the first page figure 2.5 degrees? I'm not sure how close to realistic that is but it should be close. So three degrees is the target?

if it only advances you 2.5 degrees, why would'nt you go with the 3 degree key?

If you read Supertuners post he states that you cannot get noticable gains by installing a key so the way I read it his mod will give you more noticable gains. Thus should be more than 3 I would assume.
