Oil Change Time

Being that it is the first change I would make sure I get the oil and filter changed, I would not wait until after the trip.

X2, the Vector's oil/filter are easy to change and imo, I would have more than likely changed it out after my first ride, but that is me.

as long as you have hit her good and hard for the 400 i would change it the original oil is break in oil and is formulated to help the rings seat to the cylinder walls and if you havent got all up on her she will be burning oil in the future.

Have any proof the break-in oil is specially formulated?

Imo, there is no such a thing.

When people say break-in oil, it is just a reference to the oil that is in there during the break-in period, it is not special break-in oil like some believe.

when you are breaking in a motor you dont run any synthetic as it will prevent wear and that is what you need when it is new to get everything set when you do oil change you put in synthetic or semi in there. thus reducing the wear and if done to soon it will not have a good seal between the rings and the cylinder wall and thus cause you to burn oil as the only thing that seals the oil from the combustion chamber is the rings.

I think I get what you're saying, but how come some new vehicles come from the factory with synthetic already in the engines, Corvette for one? (Mobil-1 syn)

they break them in on the dyno and motors are all hand built new corvette even has the name of the person who built it on it

This may be a moot issue after all.
When I said 400 miles, that was a guess as to what I would get this weekend.
Well, unexpected ride today just got me an extra 75 miles. I am at 365 and tomorrow in all this powder should get me a hundred or better.
I was condidering taking the fixins along and just changing it myself in the trailer one evening...show the cat guys a thing or 2 but ...........

Anyway..thanks for the replys and I'll let :4STroke: ya know how things go

Interesting...I know I don't want to burn oil later. With that in mind I will have a fun 100 this weekend

Change the oil now. At 400 miles, there is NOTHING you're going to do in the next 100 miles to better seat your rings. The critical ring seating took place during your 1st 25 miles on your new sled. Hopefully you had the motor under lots of load during that time frame.

I don't think every vette had a hand built motor. Just z06 and zr1? I know my cobras engine is hand built though. :bling

Have similar situation;, new 2012 Vector for my wife. thought by now would have some miles on it so we could change oil and filter before any big trips.Has not happened. Zero miles, no snow and nothing in forecast for next 7-10 days. FEB 8th we head to Quebec for one week saddlebag trip north and northeast of Quebec CIty. Right around 1000 miles so an oil change @ or near the 500 mile mark becomes an issue.. Could ignore it and change when we get back or bring oil with me and just change the oil on the third or forth day out. Even that will be difficult as finding room for a gallon of oil will not be easy. This is absolutely the worse year I experienced in 43 years riding.

Appreciate any suggestions on what to do.

I ended up with 520 miles and now have it changed before the big week. Had to get the sliders changed too. The mechanic wouldn't loosen the track so I'm going to have to do that myself I guess...no way I want to go through a set every 500 miles.

Are there any yammie dealers or sled dealers at all on your route. You could take oil and filter with you. Its a pretty easy change since the Vector has the bottom hatch for the filter.
My dealer salesman said to not worry about changing it before the trip but I gotta wonder at that advice

Correct my 2010 Camaro came with mobil one pure synthetic. Hers the deal with oil everbody has theory and has some stat or saying they can throw out there to sound brilliant with oil. Or I have a 1971 John Deere with 800,765 miles on it and still havent been rebuilt, all because of methodology.

Heres the best advice follow the manufactures directions and you will be fine. The only thing I would say you can differ on is brand. Yamalube is not needed as long as you are using the same weight. I hate buyin the chit but im at the store already getting plugs and everything else and dont want to make another stop.

Probably will be near the eastern end of Lac Saint the second or third day into the ride. Checking now for dealerships and if can find one or two in that area will call to see if they are accessable by sled. After that its up into the Mt Valin region and won't find anything there. Track adjustment is another issue. Came set fairly close to factory specs. Last night intended to adjust track and find out that Yamaha has put a much larger metric nut on the rear wheels. Got to get a new larger sockets in order to do track adjustments.

That's a tough one.
Personally, I would call Yamaha or your dealer and tell them your situation and see what they say?

Also, I know it would bug me, but I think I would just do the trip and change it when I got home? (If it is going to be a pain carry oil/filter and oing it trail side or where ever?)
