Guys -
Searched and didn't find what I was looking for (however I do expect [and deserve] several "SEARCH" responses so bring 'em on! )
Here's my question - I've searched and read about how much of a nightmare it can be changing the oil on the Apex. However is that due to how difficult it is to get at the oil filter? What if I just want to change the oil this year and leave the filter alone. Can I not just pull the bottom access panel off, drain all oil and refill?
Before I start I want to make sure I'm not over simplifying things..
Thanks for your help!

If the sled has low miles on it, I would definitely change it. Just because of the break in particles. I usually change mine once a year no matter what the mileage. I have skipped a year because i was traveling a lot with work and didn't have any issues. I average 2000 to 3000 miles a season. I wouldn't go more than 5000 without changing it.

agreed if its the first change it should have the filter doen as well and its not that big of deal except time from taking air box, battery/box out. about an hour. imo.

navel , for sure if its the first oil change after break-in change. Its not that bad of a job looking back on my first one. You may find the oil filter a little hard to get off as i think the guy at the factory is the Hulk. Also make sure you drain the oil out of the resevoir tank and pull the 2 allen head bolts off the bottem of the tank that holds the hose conector onto the bottem of the tank. There is a screen on the end of that you should clean also. (watch the o-ring dosn't fall off.) Was amazed after 800km how much it was pluged.
my 2 cents

It's not that hard to do. It just takes some time. Heckels in Eagle River, WI (r.i.p.) wanted around $160 for an oil change. After you do it all yourself, you will feel real good about the big bucks you saved for doing something that Jiffy Lube charges $25 for.

oil change
do breakin and change filter , after that change oil often and replace filer once a year or yam says there ( oem filter ) is good for 15000 km . but that is a little long , but if you do 2 or 3 oil changes a year it will do just fine . That is a problem with YAM . THEY ARE MAKING IT HARD TO WORK ON , so you bring it to a dealer for 100 $ hour service .

I felt the same way as you early on but if you follow the directions here it is very easy.
thttp://www.ulmerracing.com/ look for oil filter relocation instructions.

I just changed mine last night. Takes about 30 minutes. Easy to do. Follow instructions in manual. Takes 3 Q's without filter change. I change it every year. I have yet to change the filter. It says it is good to 12K

Thanks Guys -
no, this isn't the first oil change. I have 5,000KM on the sled now and the filter was last changed around 2,500KM. I just didn't think it needed another change so soon.
I'm going to just change the oil right now, and perhaps revisit the filter again next year.
And Apexaholic --Thanks for the offer!! I just may take you up on it one day! And I'll be sure to bring a Tim's travel mug for ya!

the filter may be good for 2 or 3 changes but why would you want to contaminate your new oil with old oil thats still in the filter? most people will only need 1 change a year unless your hondo then you need 3 or 4 lol. just my 2 cents
