Last ride of the season last week and the oil filter came apart on my 08 Nytro and blew oil out everywhere under the hood. The filter was from Yamaha. It was not replaced on the last oil change, but from now on it will be changed each time. The sled has not been exposed to salty roads, so corrosion should not have been a cause.

Have you visually confirmed that the filter itself is ruined or can it be the same error that a lot of yamaha 4 stroke ovners have experienced - forgotten to take away the old seal when changing oil filter + adding a new with another seal? If so, oil will blew everywhere..

Strange event.
Did the filter leak from the seal?
What kind of oil were you using?

First time I changed the oil and filter, I didn't see that the oil ring stuck to the engine and thus I went the rest of the season with two oil rings stacked. I got lucky as it didn't leak. I now look for the oil ring each time I change the filter as well as the oil.05 Vector ER,Mike Hayden
I saw it happen to a guy at Schuss Mountain in Bellaire. We were doing the radar run and he took off and blew oil everywhere. He got it towed back to the trailer and sure enough the old o-ring was still on there. He said it had been that way for almost a 1000 miles. Where in northern Michigan are you???Vector1 said:Last ride of the season last week and the oil filter came apart on my 08 Nytro and blew oil out everywhere under the hood. All Yamaha, oil and filter. I put about 2000 miles on it this year with the same filter, it looked like it was corroded, like from salt.

So the question is, did the filter fail? Did the can itself fail or seperate from the mounting plate? Pics?

My guess that is was 2 o-rings. I did it last year and put over 300 miles on it before it let go. G.B.

Do you have any pics? Many are curious as to how this has happened. Where did the oil blow out from?

These filters have a by-pass around them that is supposed to open up at a certain pressure (based on RPM's). If it failed to open that could cause an overpressure situation that would lead to something like this.
Don't know for sure that's what happened but something worth checking out.
