06 Rage engine failure, engine had 1200 miles on it.

I would do three things.
1. Have the used oil analyized at a lab to get results to send to Yamaha.
2. Have engine inspected by another Tech/Service manager from another dealer for a second opinon. May have to pay him for his time to visit that dealer to inspect.
3. Take lots of photos for small claims court litigation.
Did you purchase Y.E.S.? Is there any sludge/contaimination inside engine? Is the motor completly stock?

If it was rod failure because of an oil issue then the rod bearing and wrist pin should show signs of wear due to a lack of oil. I tend to believe it jumped time but without seeing the engine it's tough to say for sure what happened. When a chain tensioner fails and the engine jumps time the pistons collide with valves so there should be several bent valves and possibly damaged pistons which can cause a rod failure. I doubt you'll get any help from Yamaha without having it covered under warranty but Id still pressure them. Good luck.
Jumped time would only bend valves, not cause rod failure. The valves may be bent on that one cylinder if piston was going up when failed, prior to block exit. Oil today is being changed way to often, how many times have you drained your oil and it still looks clean? However nobody wants to send a sample out to have tested to see where it is at in its usefull life. I change mine seasonaly due to cheaper then major engine repair however it is always still clear/to light yellow not much differnt then poured from bottle.

I noticed the manual for my Nytro recommends oil filter changes at 20,000km intervals!

By having only 1200 miles on sled, you have not had enough time for the sled to show any manufacturing defects that it might have had. If you can prove the sled was well maintained, and the failure was a defect, keep after Yamaha to help with repairs. My 07 is on its 2nd major rebuild under warrranty after I was able to show my maintance records. Yamaha Canada and my dealer have done a good job in keeping me impressed with how they stand behind thier product. I just would like some snow so I can try out the latest rebuild.

Yes, no need to change filter due to all the fresh oil we are adding seasonaly (way to often IMHO)

engine failure update

Sled has no extended warranty, warranty ran out 1/10.

Went to dealer this am and talked to the owner who decided to tear into the engine while there, the timing chain and tensioner were good, the only issue we saw was one rod broke in half and it punch a hole in the case and broke the starter off at the same time. Piston looked perfect, the piece of rod hooked to the piston felt free with no issues, the piece of rod attached to the crank was smooth and free. The owner and lead mechanic had never have seen a rod break in half the way this did. Looking carefully at the rod and the break it appears the aluminum rod had alot of porosity in it from the casting process which the dealer believes caused the failure. They were going to contact Yamaha, so time will tell what Yamaha will do.

This is better news. Once the dealer is on your side you have a way better chance. Good luck.

Hydrolock somehow? Hard to break a rod with no piston damage...
Not really, that's how my Phazer engine died, lucky it happened under warrenty for me. The rod itself was the point of failure on my engine and they even listed the cause of failure as a "defective rod"

engine failure update

nothing new from dealer/yamaha
When the engine stopped, it was during a ride and it had been running for at least an hour and was traveling at about four miles an hour when heard a clunk and it was done.

rlbock. please keep this thread going. So interesting.
