Hi all,

Got my phazer hauled apart for some maintenance and can't get the oil filter off. I have the front frame removed so I have good access. Both of my local hardware stores were sold out of filter wrenches that would fit it. I've already tried the hose clamp/screwdriver/hammer technique but the hose clamp snapped when it was tight enough not to slip. Any suggestions?

Also, It says on the oil filter to torque it on installation (7 or 9 Nm possibly). I've always heard just to tighttn oil filters by hand.... Any comments?

Thanks a lot,

JP

I have read people punch a hole in the filter with a long screw driver and use it as leverage. it makes a bit of a mess. i have nerver done it personaly but i think that it ccould be done in a last case senario.

if there are any other suggestion out there use them first.

Yea the long screw driver will do it. I like to keep it contained. So I stab it with a Screw Drives or something I will not use any move, then put a plastic bag over it so it wont get very messy.

When you out the new one. Put some oil on the O-ring on the filter. Then you just make it snug by hand.

Also, the o-ring is probably stuck so make sure it comes off with the filter. If it stayed on the sled you will need to pull it off.

Automotive filters usually say 3/4 to 1 turn after the rubber ring contacts (hand tightening will do it). Never heard of torqueing an oil filter? How would you use a torque wrench on it anyway? I have a small adjustabe filter wrench that you can use a socket wrench on (bought at Princess Auto) and it is way better than the strap types.

Maybe he plans on getting one with a nut on it :dunno: If he did find a wrench or a filter that use socket or ratchet adaptions, he will need to use a inch pound graduated torque wrench. I still stick with my comment of Hand Tight.
