OIL FILTERS

At some point, I should trust the engineers at Yamaha rather than some old-timer who would probably try to adjust the points on my sled if he had the chance.

Tisk tisk! I'm a old timer and I would not even consider changing your points at 3,000kms. Now your muffler bearings are a different story. Change them every 3,000 kms for sure.

Only 1,500 miles this winter. New 10-40 Amsol oil and a Yami filter once a year need it or not. Maybe next year I'll do the points. LOL Just how old timers do things.

Yamaha trusts their OEM filters to go 12,000 miles after the initial filter change at 500 miles. Saving $5.00 bucks every couple of years doesn't make much sense to me. Stock filter and Yamalube for my Vector. :4STroke:

Do you have to use Yamahas filter and oil if sled is still under warranty.
Absolutely not! Some dealers will still try to tell you that you have to but they are actually breaking the law when they say that.
In 1975 congress passed the Magnuson-Moss act. In passing the Act, Congress meant to give consumers access to warranty information, let consumers comparison shop for warranties, encourage warranty competition and promote timely and complete performance of warranty obligations.
Manufacturers will set a standard required for thier product and as long as you are using an equal or greater product, your warrenty can not be voided. An example would be your manufacturer recommends an API rated oil of SM or greater and you put an SL rated oil in there, you just voided your warranty. But if you run Amsoil SM rated 0w-30 your warranty can not be voided! It is a federal law!
Make sure you follow what the Manufacturer recomends and you can run any compatable oil you choose!
