I just checked the oil in my 06 Apex and it looks WAY overfilled. Had it serviced 120 miles ago at the dealer and just figured I would check as we are going on a long trip this week. I started the sled in my trailer and let it get nice and hot with an occasional blip of the throttle for about 7-10 minutes. Then I let it idle for a minute or so and shut it off. I immediately pulled the dip stick, wiped it off then put it in and did NOT screw it down and the entire stick was covered in oil so I looked in the tank and the oil level was about 1-2 inches below the opening in the oil tank.
#1. Am I checking it correctly?
#2. If it is overfilled, did I do any damage riding it that way for 120 miles? The motor sounds a bit noisey for a few seconds when I start it up cold and it never did that before. Only 1400 miles

yes you checked it correctly. no it will not hurt anything. if you are concerned with the level, use a turkey baster or small pump to remove some from the top of the tank, easier than removing side panels etc.

I always check mine after every ride this way its warmed up good, let it sit for about 2 min. then check it, I've notice if you check it from a cold start and let it run for a few minutes I find level not as acurate as a long HOT run...

you have to let the sled sit for a few minutes to let it equalize. its a scavenge system, pushing all the oil back to the tank.

hmm, I just checked it stone cold and the level is at the same height???????
When it was running the oil tank was hot so I know its circulating but I thought the level would drop quite a bit when cold.

cold or hot the level should be real close.if you run it ,shut it down and immediately check the tank it will be a little higher.let it sit for a few and it will drop a little. you said the dealer changed the oil 120 miles ago. sounds like they might not have drained the bottom of the case and just the tank and put in the specified amount back into the tank which would make it about 1/2 qt over full.wont hurt anything but you can suck some out with a turkey baster as stated above.

Thanks, I was kind of worried because of the "noisy" start up but I guess I will attribute that to the zero degree temps that it sat in for a week. It quieted down with a few seconds.

They can be quite noisy at startup when really cold out. Nothing to worry about.
