I am checking around to see who mfg.'s 0W-30 for my Vector. Come to find out that I can only get CASTROL 0W-30 full synthetic in my area at $5.50 per quart. My local dealer has the YAMAlube semi-syn 4cw 0w-30 for $7.59 per quart.
Can I use 5W-30? When I called another dealer he stated that they are using 5w-30 in all of their oil changes on the RS sleds. WHAT TO DO??

Buy the Yamaha oil. I mean seriously with all the money we put into this sport you're going to worry about maybe spending an extra $10 for an oil change?

I also have a question.
Is the Yamalube 5/30 mineral oil with synthetic additives ?
If so maybe it would be the stuff to use on the 500 mile change for the remainder of the 1st year [insure a good breakin] and then go to Yamalube 0/30 synthetic blend.
Your thoughts.

The 5w-30 that this dealer uses for oil changes is the semi-syn "4S" variety, not the 4CW.
If that is the case, can I not use a high grade 5w-30 semi., just not Yamaha's propietary brand?

Use the Yamaha recommended oil. For the last two seasons, they have had the semi-synthetic blend out and it works extremely well, plus it enables the sleds to start easier in cold weather.

For $20 bucks a year you can become a Preferred Customer with AMSOIL one of the, if not the very best money can buy synthetic oils specifically designed for your four stroke Yamaha in 0-30 or 0-40. Cost around $4.75- $5.00 a qt. GETTER DONE !
You don't really think Yamaha makes oil do you ?

So now it costs $40 to put oil just as good as the oil Yamaha sells in my sled? $20 for the preferred customer status and $20 more to fill it up. Glad you like it, that's cool, but the synthetic I get from Yamaha works fine for me.

Okay...okay. Can we all just agree to disagree. I was only curious if 5w-30 was an acceptable replacement to 0w-30. Untimately, Yamalube will work just fine for me. I really do not like using Yam's proprietary oil(No, I really do not believe that YAM produces their own oil. I know that someone else mfg. it and it is labeled for YAM)

Lighter weight oil enables the sled to start easier when it gets really cold, like -20C or colder. This applies regardless which brand you buy.

When the 2003 RX-1 first came out the specified oil was 5w-30, Yamaha switched it to 0w-30 in 2004 or 2005.
As someone stated above the main reason to switch was extreme cold starting. If where you ride it doesn't get extremely cold (like below -15F) then 5w-30 would be fine.
