Over heat

Rode in the UP last weekend and had no issues with over heating. How do you get the display to show the actual temperature in degrees? Mine is just a bar that shows hot and cold.

Just hold down left button I think while it's on temp display. Still shows the bar...but also shows deg
 

Mine stays consistently around 172. Have not rode in temps higher than low 30's, though.
 
rode today with 2016 venture and 2011 apex hardpacked trails early am. Apex no studs stock venture 96 studs. SW 192 studs . SW overheated several times. Apex and Venture no problem.

Went out last weekend early in the AM with temperature around -17C (0F) when we left. Weather the day before was above freezing and the groomer did a great job during the night but in the morning the trail was hard as concrete….no lube whatsoever. My buddy tried to run his 1200 Skippity-Doo without his scratchers down and soon overheated. His scratchers went down but no scratchers for me so I figured I would overheat also??

Gotta say I was extremely impressed!! My Sidewinder RTX-LE ran the same temperature with minimal to no snow as it did the day before in loose snow. I am studded which helps a bit but the coolant temperature stayed relatively constant at 76C (169F). I also can’t believe how accurate the temperature gauge is. When the engine is stone cold, the temp gauge on the sled indicates the same reading as the thermometer in my garage. If I ride slowly, down an icy road temp will climb to 83C (180F) but if I hit a patch of snow the temperature falls back to 76C (169F)…..very accurate gauge!!

I am also very impressed at how well plain hyfax holds up on my Sidewinder after struggling with slider issues and exploding idler wheels on 3 different Apex’s over the last 10 years. In these conditions my sliders would have absolutely melted down on my Apex and I wouldn’t have considered riding early that morning before things loosened up. I watched my Sidewinder’s sliders closely all day thinking they would disappear but no issue. I looked at them really close after the ride and my sliders are just like new!!

Sorry, bit of a long winded post to get to my point….. Like I said I have a Sidewinder RTX-LE. It has been studded which helps cooling but I also added half a bottle of Hy-Per Lube Super Coolant to the cooling system. I used this product in all my Apex’s with great success. There are a few similar additives out there like RedLine’s Water Wetter which does the same job. They get a bit technical (goofy) with their description of how the product works, claiming it reduces the surface tension of the coolant allowing it to deeply penetrate metal surfaces.....bla bla bla???

I can explain it in much easier……it is simply an antifoaming agent for your cooling system.

It minimises air bubbles created by fluid flow through water pumps & passages but more importantly it minimises air bubble generated by cool liquid contact to hot metal surfaces or boiling. In turn this optimises liquid contact to both hot engine components and heat exchangers for better heat transfer. More fluid contact equals more efficient cooling.

It definitely helps in my opinion! Give it a try if you are having over temp issues……it is not expensive.

Very interesting - anyone try this stuff and have some before and after evidence to indicate how much cooler the sled might run?? The temps john10toe posted seem to be what I run 76-77C right now without the product.

I had some variation in temps at times the first couple hundred miles or so. It was weird . Like the sled would run in the 180's for like 10-15 miles then would drop into the low 170's.(maybe the coolant settled some) air bubbles?. The conditions were exactly the same & I watch temp gauge pretty religious.
But now I run 168-174 almost all the time.. ALSO these sled are a lot more sensitive to low snow or super hard packed trails even with a ton of nails in them. The temps climb pretty fast with low snow.. And drop fast when you take it in the really deep loose stuff.
 
Remember if you having issues with your Sidewinders and I will post this over and over, you need to take it into the dealer as a new product and get the problem or problems noted with Yamaha so we all can all benefit from an update or a bulletin about the issue. Without doing so the number will be skewed and there will be no changes due to lack of unreported problems.

Good point. Emailed dealer about lost turbo bolt.

My dealer actually probably hates me. I have contacted/complained a few different times. 2 blemished panels and now a delaminating tunnel decal. They have all on order and have been good to me so far. I also ask them about hearing any problems about rollers, belts, and coil bind. They say they have not. One of them is currently riding an SE, with no issues. They also took care of my turbo bolts before I picked it up.;)!

They are a very good dealer. I drive 1.5 hours to them.. You really want to know what's going on> the guys in the back are very good. And I have called and talked directly with those guys in service and diagnosed and solved issues right over phone.. I might be a little more mechanically inclined then most, BUT it really helps when you have good wrenches in back.. AND THEY HAVE that IMO
