Hello, i am working on a custom build with a Phazer engine in an old 89 Honda FL400 Pilot. I am starting to try and figure out the exhaust and have a couple of questions.
Does the length of the exhaust have to be the same as on the sled, or will it hurt if i cut the length of the pipes lets say about in half? I have heard that it needs to be exactly the same length as OEM, But on the other hand guys change their mufflers and whatnot all the time and wouldnt that alter the backpressure the same as shortening the pipes? I figure the computer can compensate for this, i mean it does compensate for altitude ect already.
Is there anything else i need to look out for when building this buggy as far as the engine goes? any other known issues or things that these engines like/dont like? Thanks in advance. I will share some photos once i get things rolling.

I'm no exhaust expert but I would think, only from seeing pics of sxs with exhaust, I would think the do need to be tuned. IE: length of header, pipe, back pressure.
I've had a pipe fall off my race quad in a moto once. Was a total dog, all bark and no bite.
Be sure to update us with what you find and mostly some pics!! I think that's a WICKED idea!! I keep bugging my neighbour to buy a sxs and I'll convert it to hand controls for Him. But he won't bite. I'm doing up a zero turn for him in spring. The kubota we did is just to big to maneuver around while cutting grass.
Sorry

Thanks for the reply. I'm not used to the 4 stroke world yet. My other pilot has a 670 skidoo engine, and another with a 570 exciter engine. So it sounds like for now I will match the pipe length unless someone says otherwise!

I love it!!! Great choice on machine. The fact it's custom "built not bought" is pretty cool. You could easily transfer into a new sxs but to customize one takes the cake ![Nos :nos :nos](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/nos.gif)

Oh yeah I'm addicted to these pilots. Don't really care for the new sxs's. I could get in em no problem but they all seem a bit cheaply built to me and heavy! My 670 pilot weighs about 700lb and will run circles around the sxs guys at the dunes. Plus I have about half the money into it that they do!
BTW this picture is what I started with. Bought it on eBay with only this picture. She came a long ways. Shipped from Alabama to Washington

So from my reading of other posts, it seems that the header length does matter. Can't be too short or it will burn em up. So I will try and get as close to stock length as possible. Yamaha didn't pay engineers to figure out how to build the sled for nothing
. Will just be a not more challenging as the exhaust ports of the engine are about 12" from the rear of the buggy!

You may also want to look at some exhaust systems from a Yamaha Tmax 500 scooter. The engine is very similar (not sure if the exhaust flange is the same or not) but has a little lower output.
