phazer engine loss of all oil and destruction

That would also make sense.I was looking at wiring diagrams and even back in 07 they did have a low oil shut off circuit.I see they list that as new this year.I dont get it.Possibly with our dry sump system and its ability to keep oil pressure with even a small amount of oil in system there isnt enough warning?I would think that maybe they tightened up parameters for warning or maybe they just changed the dipstick sensor which just measures volume activates the warning? Not sure whether they are relying on volume, pressure or both to shut engine off and how soon it does activate it.

I wonder when they added that system, it was "New for 2011" but I've dumped my 09' on it side in powder and it shut down in less than 10 seconds on its own. Full tank of gas too so It wasn't fuel starved. Then again mine tossed a rod through the crank for no reason either (BEFORE the above incident), at least it was under warranty! Engine failure was blamed on a defective rod as the bearings were good/free spinning.

Clutch deflection

I think the reduction gear issue in the 07 models was an engine case issue on the block where the bearing goes. The easiest way to check that is take the clutch cover off and belt guard. Throttle sled until primary clutch engages and see if primary clutch moves towards secondary it is very noticable with the eye to see. When I discovered my 07 MTX doing it I was at least able to save it from blowing up sorry for your loss.

I have yet to perform the above test on my 07, but what can be done if deflection is detected? I understand that there will be 'some' movement as the motor is rubber mounted, but how much is too much? Was this isolated to early build 2007's?

I think you may be right about not having enough warning.

I am not sure about the "New Oil Pressure Sensing System" on the 11's and up. On my 09 if the pressure is low it shuts off, it will also tell me if the oil level is low.

I think it would be a good idea if the sled was limited to bellow engagement speed if the oil volume drops enough to set off the low oil light. Then if the pressure where to drop the system would have enough warning to shut itself off if more oil was lost and pressure dropped just like if the pressure was too low after an oil change. Just a thought?

I also like the idea Mooseman had about an audiable alarm to warn. I also don't look down at my gauges very often.

I dont think the Yamaha site is very accurate. It does list the shut off feature in 11 and 12.I think it was there since beginning. It says it does limit the engine before shutting it down.Sure would be nice to see some pics of the engine from Ratman.I am just gonna forget about it.All a guy can really do is check oil level once in awhile and hope everything holds together!Speaking of that.Whos bright idea was it to require tools to remove the right side panel and non to do the left?Should have the loop dzus on both sides so it encourages oil level checks every ride like we are supposed to do.I never remove it during season I admit.

ya,isnt that weird, those quick fasteners work good, heck, they could of used those on all 4 panels,i hate those stupid allen fasteners, always full of ice

Just for everyone's information with regards to the "new" oil pressure system on the Phazer (2011+?)

I did a bit of research. I contacted Yamaha Canada (buddy is looking at getting a phazer so I wanted to know what was new about them).

This is the answer I got...

"Good afternoon:

This is not an easy question to answer. The change basically pertains to
the information on pages 25 and 26 of your owner's manual. Previous models
were not as sophisticated and would basically make no judgements other than
to shut things down. They now can monitor oil pressure better and will make
a judgement on how and when to default. If there is an issue you will see a
'30' and this will tell you to see a dealer.
"

I guess the change was in the brain of the sled. Not sure if it means that there are more sensors or it just make decisions differently based on oil level or rpm's?

The dealer is busy, so i still have no answer yet as to how the sudden loss of all oil. I promise that I will update the site, to help all future/ present phazer owners.

As winter is short, I have purchased another sled. 2007 Yamaha Apex with 1800 miles at a greatv price I could not pass up. Easier starting, no upgrades needed, holy cow fast, but perhaps not as fun...time will tell.

Thanks to all for your advise on starters, rad fans, and other help. This is a great site.

I found out the answer...my error.

When installing the new oil filter, I failed to remove the old rubber gasket where it meets the motor.

eventually the rubber on rubber seal burst; the oil emptied; and the engine blew (crank/ rods/ the works).

The phazer engine is still proven bulletproof , unless user errort.

Ahhhh, the famous double gasket on the oil filter....betcha never do that again. ;)!
