Hi All,

Well its getting to that time of the year when we need to start warming up the rides.

Just a precursor to what I'm going to be working on...2007 Phazer GT shorty -> Phazer Longtrack 144" with EZRYDE.

Other mods include exhaust, clutch work, and other simple bolts ons. Will start posting pics this weekend to get the juices flowing. Should be a fun project.

Admins - Please feel free to move post if not in the right area...Just wanted to get the people on the main pages interested as well as most dont check the projects area.

Thanks

I'm also interested in the EZ ryde skid. I mostly trail ride so I'm looking at the 136. Not sure what track to use, but would like to increase lug height to 1.5. Other things on the list include skis and clutching, so my wants are similar to yours ... wish Yamaha would offer this stuff as optional equipment. Will be watching this thread with interest. Can't wait to hear what you think of the EZ ryde skid.

Hi OVR4D,

I primarily ride trail and hard pack as well in the Midwest. Fotunately but unfortunately though my group is looking to go out West this season and I needed to get a litte more traction into the soft stuff, hence going with the EZRYDE product. It was a close decision for me to go with the EZRYDE as I was very close to getting a ZX2 skid for the Phazer as well. For people primarily trail/hard pack riding, I have not heard many complaints with the ZX2 skid in any Yamaha product as mostly they result from install errors if any. That being said, a 136" EZRYDE would be great in my opinion and while they are good on the trails, they truly excell in the powder. If youre looking for something to just trail ride, I would actually look into a phazer with a ZX2.

Further, why not make it easy on yourself and run the 144"? While I need my 144 for a little deeper snow, the Phazer is limited in power so I didnt want to loose any top end because all my power was devoted to trying to turn my 150"+ track lol. While I know people say you run into issues with turning and things like that on the trail, I tend to disagree with any skid that has tipped rails. On 150"+ tracks, yeah that is true, bu on a circular basis, 136" vs 144" is actually quite marginal - only a couple inches longer when they are on the ground.

My brother in law had a 144" ZX2 on his Apex a few years back and I have to say, it truly was the ultimate trail riding skid - in my personal opinion. While I know I'm probably opening another can of beans by making that last statement, Im sure others will comment about them too. But again in my eyes, why not make it easy and go with a 144" so you dont have to worry about cutting a track to fit and just looking into finding a new or used 144 MTX track ready to bolt in?

Everybody has their own opinion or thoughts and ideas for their project...I hope this helps your case and decisions on the 136. Plus, at the end of the day, that a lot of money for a 136" when at the end of the day you can just buy a couple extensions...just my 2 cents as I look at my bank account now post purchase lol Well worth it though in my eyes haha Hope you tune in during the next few weeks/months...I hope I can help answer any questions you may have! Feel free to ask em!

550ss.It sounds like a nice project but i would not go with a stock pahzer mtn maverick track. The mavricks are a terrable powder track.A 144 back country with 1 3/4" lugs will go through way more or better yet get a camo 144x2 but of course either of thos tracks you will have to cut down.

i totally agree, the maverick track suckz both in the powder and on the trail,+ my track is basicly destroyed after just one season. i think that 44mm tall lugs would be perfect cuz then u can get some spinning and not just plowing through the snow. cutting down the track can´t be that hard if u use a tablesaw.

Hi Pro/Emme,

While I totally agree with you guys that the stock Mavvy track has gotten some negative press, I couldn't help picking up a brand new one off craigslist for a traded item valued in my book for less than $250. I really couldn't pass up the deal. That being said, for me right now, the track should work adequately (hopefully) lol. Really for this project it came down between buying a decently used or brand new Challenger and attempting to cut it down for the first time. While I have confidence in my "Norm Abram" skills, rubber is a heck of a lot different going through a table saw for the first time as I would be attempting. I had to weigh ruining a brand new $400+ track or getting a stock ready to drop in track on trade.

Just came down to a judgement and stock won for this year. Doesnt mean I won't change as these Phazers are by far the easiest sled to do a track change on!

As promised...I wanted to snap a few pics tonight after I finished drilling out the 4 top and side rivets and removed the 4 bolts that hold the rear grabbar to the sled. After those were removed, time for the new rear bumper...First pic is a shot of the front of the sled - Just a stock 07 Phazer GT with some goodies from Skinz that were added last year. Next is the rear...Man there's a ton of space back there lol

If you can still find a 144x1.5" freeride, its a GREAT track for dual purpose use, and its 14" wide. My sled is setup for 50/50 use and that track is perfect. It moves through deep powder just as good as the maverick did and is LIGHTYEARS ahead on trail use. The Maverick is horrible for breaking on the trails and loves to slide because the paddles bend easy and it also slides out around corners. You might also need to install 8 tooth MTX drivers to fit a 2" track in there, I think a 2" track is a tight fit for 9 tooth drivers. Your building the same sled as me except backwards. I'm installing GT arms on the front of my MTX and extending your GT to MTX length.

Hi Blue,

Thanks for the help and feedback. I definetly agree and wish I was able to find a Freeride as I have heard impressive reviews when installed on this sled. I mustve missed the bubble on them before they went out of production. No biggy for the immediate moment as I will be riding predominantely powder this year. Maybe Woody's could provide some 2.5" spikes for me when I do ride the trails lol.

As for setup, you are right, I do need 8" drives. While the 2" track will fit on 9s", its just way too tight. Further, you have any recommedations on gearing? I have the MTX gears and chain ready to go, but am planning some clutching mods as well. What are your thoughts? Heard good things with Schmidt / Ulmers setups.

How do you like the Ultra Q?

Thanks again.

550ss - I appreciate the input and will look a little more at the ZX2 skid. Do you happen to know the weight of the ZX2 or how it compares to the EZRYDE (heavier, lighter)?

My first sled was a used '07 Phazer GT with 144 rail extensions on a 2" Maverick track. I will say the OEM skid with extensions was heavy and not easy to lift once stuck. Blueironranger's comments on the paddles of the Maverick track are spot on ... they will bend over and tear if you do a fair amount of trail riding. I didn't feel the need to change the top gear, as the torque of the Phazer works pretty well for me and I'm not concerned about speed.

I currently have an RTX model, and would like a lighter, but still decently suspended skid and longer track. There just isn't much opportunity to ride off trail in my area, so I'm leaning toward a 136 X 14 X 1.5. As you point out, there's not much more track on the ground with a 144, so I'm thinking about keeping it shorter, but with stiff lugs like the Freeride or a hill-X track. That said, I still don't know what tracks are out there in that length and lug. For me at least, the jumping off point will be finding a light weight skid with decent suspension at the 136 length.

Question:
Will you be able to mount the EZRYDE in the same location as the OEM skid or will you have to move the skid to keep the approach angle?

Hi OVR4D,

No problem, anytime...I hope that helps.

On a weight standpoint, the ZX2 looks to be roughly 10 lbs. lighter than that of any length EZRYDE. Here's what I found:

ZX2 121" = 53 lbs., 156" = 56 lbs.
EZRYDE 136" = 65lbs or so

Thanks for the additional pointers on the geraing and track info. Should be a nice crossover when you're done ordering all the parts.

As for mounting the EZRYDE, its actually quite easy but a totally different approach angle compared to stock, although it is not in the same location as the stock holes, you are provided with measurements and pictures from EZRYDE. All you need to do is level the top of tunnel, measure back from existing holes and straight down from the top of the tunnel. Very self explanatory.

With mtx 8 tooth drivers the stock mtx 17 tooth upper gear is what you want for powder but you won't like it when riding trails. The 17 tooth runs out of clutch ~70mph and will bump the rev limiter at ~77mph GPS speed (speedo reads 5-6mph faster) I run a 19 tooth on mine and I hardly ever run out of clutch, it makes it to 78mph @ 11,300rpm before the clutches shift out and I haven't been able to hit the rev limiter as it doesnt have enough power to pull the 19 tooth gear to that speed. Dropping to an 8 tooth track driver will put your speedo off even more than it is already. As far as the silencer, it's ok, with noticeable power gain and not TOO loud. I wouldn't want it any louder as I really don't wish to piss other people off and get trails closed. I picked it up as a "scratch and dent" for 150$ new because it had a little ding in the case.

Sled starting to come apart...

-Plastics out getting hydro-dipped
-Might convert to black side covers instead of stock silver
-Few things to cleanup, paint and powdercoat
-Exhaust on order
-Roll-Over Valve to install
-MTX drivers and gearing to install
-Schmidt Bros. Stage 2 MTX kit and intake pods to install
-Peak Line Windshield

Hi All,

Havent been around for a while...but wanted to start giving some updates as I have been back at the build!

First off, got the old 121 track and skid out so here's a sneak peek at what she looks like all bare bones. Subframe, miscellaneous parts out to powdercoat, odds and ends, new SKINZ exhaust to go on, etc.
