My Phazer gave me an error code 88 today. My dealer says this indicates eithier an open or shorted reverse mechanism position indicator switch. After shutting the machine down and restarting, the code cleared.
Has any one else seen this??? I wonder if this was just due to the reverse system possibly not being completly in forward??
Any ideas?

It may have been stuck, I can foresee problems with the electronic reverse...I've had to lift up the back of the sled to get it to fully kick out of reverse.

If you read the manual, it indicates to turn the machine off and restart it to default back to forward. The first time I pushed the reverse button when experimenting, the buzzer stayed solid and I couldn't get it back into forward. I turned it off/on and it fixed itself. Obviously it's something that's been considered as it specifies it in the OM.

Well, somthing in the reverse system is fubar. I have run the sled on a jack stand several times. Each time, I have cycled the unit from drive to reverse several times, eventually (while in drive) the reverse beeper will intermidantly beep randomly and the code 88 will come back.
I am taking the sled back to the dealer tomorrow Hopefully they will find the root cause (Soon)
Currently not very happy with the phazer

if you shut it down and re-start it it totally resets the system. I had this problem with my rage and i dicked around with it for hours and when i shut it off and started it back up to put it into the garage it all reset.

Latest update regarding the "code88" reverse system failure. Dealer has the sled. Dealer has tried new CDI and new spedo unit, this did not fix the problem. Dealer called Yamaha tech support, they recommend changing the reverse servo motor. Yamaha has seen one other bad servo so far. Hopefully I will have the sled back from the dealer by the middle of next week and the problem will not re-occur.

Well, the mystery of the "code*88" reverse sensor failure has been solved. When my dealer took the sled apart to change the reverse servo, the mechanic found the reverse sensor wire melted to the exaust pipe. As the engine warmed up the wire would melt to the exaust and short the sensor to ground causing the code 88.
I am very impressed with the service at Woody's Yamaha in Topsham Maine. Keith was very responsive to this problem and kept me updated. I highly recommend Woody's to anyone........... was best price too!

Same thing on my sled! The dealer noticed the error 88 while gettin the sled ready for me to take it home. He fixed the wire and rerouted it ! He said it shouldnt be a problem anymore!! At least I know where to check if it occurs again.

sorry, I did not actually see the wire. The wire came from one of the gear box shift position sensors and was laying on the exaust header (rear of motor). Factory didnt get the wire properly secured to the frame,
Your venture may not be layed out the same as my FX, you are most likely OK

the wire is located on the right side . My dealer had to remove the gas tank to fix it. You should see the wire by removing the right side panels! When I was there, the mechanic was holding the wire away from the exhaust with a long screwdriver with only the sidepanels off. The error code didnt show with the wire away from the exhaust. I asked him what he was doin and he told me about the problem. I would have never know if I didnt go see my sled in the shop...
