Poor running Apex------its a long story

WOW----I didn't understand a thing you said!!! I do recall with like the Ign malfunction that like Cyl 1 and 4 are paired together and 2 and 3 are paired together and once an ignition malfunction is detected that it shuts the power off to both Cylinders?? I think that is how I read it??

:yam: i work for a dealer in central ny and we have found that the gas these days with ethonal in it has been a major problem with carbs. and we also have had some with injectors plugging up . they wont spray rite. you must put some blue stuff in your tank . it wont fix the pluged injectors but after you have them clean it will keep stuff out of them

I 'think' its saying it detected a open circuit on the coil wiring and it cuts the fuel injection on the paired bank. I have no idea what all the jibberish on the air control flux capacitor solenoind is all about.

I would say swap your coils around from different banks, and while doing that inspect the wiring very carefully look for frays or wear marks. It must be a short somewhere for it to work then not work again. See if the connection inside the coil is good, the one on top of the plug.

Good luck keep us posted

I have swapt around coils, I have checked and tested the ignition harness and found nothing wrong!! BTW still got code 36 when swapt coils. Like I said before I don't know what I did to it but it seems to be running fine now. Just got back from a 100 mile ride and it ran ok. I have used diffrent ethonal treatments throught the year but maybe something was pluging something. time will tell.

The problem is if my logic is correct say the #4 injector is dirty how would it throw a code 36 for a open circuit (shorting out) on the coil?

My money is you have a wire rubbing somewhere.

That is one frustrating problem you got there hopefully we can get a solution.

A little more detail on what was happening:

After 20 miles one day the code came up and it ran like crap in the low RPM range. Rode home, inspected and swapped coils. Sled ran good for 40 miles. Code came up again and the sled ran like crap in low RPM's. High RPM's above 7K were good with the exception of not wanting to go above 9k a couple times on the 40 mile ride back. Tore the exhaust down and inspected as I was about due anyways. Replaced the exhaust donuts and fired her up the next morning and she ran good. Just doesn't feel like a wire problem to me. Hopefully the dealer will figure it out.

Initial thought was the coil should be replaced and the codes need to be reset. Have not heard anything since.

Any chance your speedo was acting up as well? Mine was flaking out, showing 5mph when sitting still and fluctuating with the RPM's.

speedo was fine---like I said I put 100 miles on it two nights ago and didn't have a problem.

Dealer claims codes need to be reset and coil needs to be replaced. Doesn't make any sense to me but a new coil is on the way.

Why would we replace the coil when it is swapped between cylinder 3 & 4 and yet 36 still comes back on the display after 50 miles. No logic there....

I hear ya---keep me updated on how it works out. Mine is still running ok soo I guess that I am gunna keep riding it. Your right though it doesn't have much logic to it does it?? Was he able to test all the coils??? Still sounds more like wiring then anything but who knows!!

There is no way the coil is the problem. With the codes cleared 36 still came up with the coils swapped (coil 4 went to 3 and 3 to 4.). Dealer finally agreed it is a wiring problem. I inspected the wiring again for anything obvious. I took an ohm meter to the wire that plugs into the coil and it checks out. The other day I went to start it and the fuel pump came on, dash lit up, but it would not crank. Did that about 7 times, then it cranked strong and fired up.

It is in the dealers hands, again.

I took mine to the dealer yesterday---hope they can find the problems---I get code 43 sometimes and right now it wants to spit/sputter/burble at 6000-7000 rpms. I never got code 36 back though and it never acted up with the cylinder going online/offline again. Will keep ya posted on what the boys at Excell find.

Yep, I get the same sputter type sound at that RPM as well, even with the code not on. My last Apex never did that and neither has this one until now. Please let me know if you hear anything.
