For the guys that have had the suspenion arms powdercoated - were they more resiliant to rusting after it was done? Or do they eventuall start rusting after 2yrs like the factory finish?

Just debating when the suspension is apart this summer if it makes sense to clean them up and do it right - or not...

Thanks
MS

I have my a arms and subframe powdercoated Yamaha Blue (Reflex powdercoat which is closest to Yamaha blue). Anyway, This is the second winter for them and zero rust or corrosion anywhere.

I'm on my 3rd year of A arms powder coated, no rust!! also had the spindles and all rear suspension parts done too, Do it! pick a cool color, will change the look of the sled! NO RUST on any thing like stock!!

What about the arms up in the skid frame. They are subject to way more abuse than the front a-arms.
How do they stand up, ice, salt, and sand being whipped around in there at a high rate of speed. Is the coating pretty resiliant or does rust start to show up on all the joints???
Thanks
MS

I am running mine for the third year powdercoated by www.diamondelitepowdercoating.com (local shop and does EXCELLENT work), if people are having spindles bend because of powdercoating their is too much heat being used when being powdercoated. I havent had any issues at all with my frontend after I got it powdercoated.

Makes a sled standout on the trail.

Did you guys have someone strip all the paint off the parts (ie torsion spring, skid from arms etc.) before they were painted. Or did you just buff off the rusty spots and powder coat over them?
Thanks
MS

For powder coating to cure and adhere correctly, the part should be stripped to bare metal. With the exception of some powders, you can make multiple coats of powder on powder, but not powder on top of conventional paint. When the parts are powder coated, you won't develop any rust, unless the powder gets chipped. You'll really have to beat the snot out of it though.

I hear bad things about power coating spindles....all the heat makes them weak
I've never heard of anyone having spindle or spindle housing failures from powder coating. I did my own spindle housings and A-arms a year ago with no issues so far. (see pic) Different powders cure at different temps. There are some exceptions, but 300 - 400 degrees is an average curing temp for most powders. That's much cooler than what the aluminum pistons in our engines are exposed to.
