Can anyone tell my Yamaha did not use the Mono rear skid that comes with the Apex on the Nitro. Is that rear suspension not designed to be a jump suspension, like Snowtech said in the lastest article. Or is it because the nitro is still in the old chassis and it does not fit properly?

Mono will fit in the old chassis just fine. It was in the 05 RX-1 and also is in the 06 Vector GT. Probably didn't use it in the Nytro because the Mono is more of a trail tamer than a jump suspension.

I'm guessing they didn't want to setup the Mono to be that stiff.
It was probally easyier to setup 2 shocks super stiff then it would have been to setup one shock that way

Yes, but what about the weight difference in the two rear skids. Also, they did use it in Vincents race sled when it was first designed and had great success with it.

The weight difference is hardly anything. The skid used in the snoX sleds was quite different than what we are seeing in the trail sleds now. Different geometry, etc. You really can't compare the snoX skid and the new trail skid, about the only thing they share is the fact they're both monoshocks.

Will the Mono be able to take a good beating? I'm not going to use my RTX for snowX but I do like hitting a small jump once in a while. I had a M10 in my last sled and broke both rails. When I asked the dealer about it I was told that an M10 was designed for comfort and not for ditch banging. Is this going to be the same type of setup?

The mono-shock in the race sled was meant for snocross racing and racing only. The average rider (pretty much everyone who doesn't race snocross, even though some people think they ride that hard) could not use the full capability of the race version. I beleive the weight transfer was the biggest problem. (I went with my dealer to a Yamaha dealer demo ride in '01 and asked the engineers present lots of questions about that rear skid) Take the '02 Viper rear suspension and make it twice as hard...that's what the race suspension was. The engineers told me that it would never be released on a consumer sled. I read an article a few months ago (I forget where) about the guy who invented the original mono shock. He was told to give up on it after the race program died. He continued to work on it even using some of his own money to fund the R&D. It was an excellent article if anyone knows where it's from and could post it here. I wouldn't be surprised to see a softer version of the race skid in the nytro in the near future.

Well, that's what I was thinking. I read the article, it's on the Snowtech site. Just wondering if there will be another version of it for the sno-X sled that they may be introducing next year. I tried to find the copy of the sno-x sled, but it's hard to look at the picture to see if what skid is in it. The new sno-x sled that was floating around a couple of months ago.

Its not as if Yamaha took the monoshock from the sno-x sleds and merely bolted it up.
They tweaked and refined it so that it could be suited for trail riding.
One thing to note, you can get the Monoshock on the Vector if you opt for the Vector GT. Most of us are probably already aware of that but I thought it was worth mentioning. Slap a taller seat and a bar riser on the Vector and you pretty much have a Nytro (except for the clutching and gearing changes).

That's what I mean...The mono shock started from the race version so you would think if Yamaha wanted to make a "jump" suspension it wouldn't be hard to do. If they are serious about building a sno-x sled I'm sure it would sport the mono shock suspension. I just don't see Yamaha getting into the sno-x game. I can see them putting a stiffer more rigid version of the mono shock in the Nytro though.

Could someone post the Snowtech's website address?

Perhaps, but a few years ago you would have never thought that a 4-stroke would replace the SRX.2BLUE4U said:That's what I mean...The mono shock started from the race version so you would think if Yamaha wanted to make a "jump" suspension it wouldn't be hard to do. If Yamaha wants to get into sno-x, they will and Im sure whatever they build will be great. They sno-x race the Vector in Europe and Japan, the only thing that is stopping them in the US are the currently rules concerning displacement.
As for making the Monoshock work as a "jump" suspension, Im sure it could be done. However, if you make it so that it soaks up the big bumps, it will probably pound you to death on the little bumps.
Perhaps others who have more experience with the Monoshock can shed more light on the big bump possibility than can I.

That you can take to the bank. Yamaha never does anything half-assed...cough,cough arctic cat, cough, cough. Unlike the other three manufacturers, Yamaha rests on it's laurels for a few years and may even fall behind once in a while (pro-action skid was ready to go) but when they do come out with something it is by far and away above anything else on the market.
As for snocross...When I went on that dealer demo ride a few years back, it took place at Cantebury Downs (Probably the biggest snocross track in the area) so alot of guys were asking about a 440 race sled. The answer we heard over and over again was "You probably will never see a 440 Yamaha". I would like to see a totally separate class for the four strokes until WSA finds out they can compete with two-smokes then they will allow it just like motocross. Oh...by the way...does anyone even ride a two-stroke bike in motocross anymore????[/quote]
