yammiman said:If you look at the shootout results over the past few years, there is not much more than 1 second difference between 600's, 800's, and 1000's in 1320' - now put those sleds on snow with different tracks and different weight riders and you are going to see all sorts of results - anytime I've raced on snow, the results are different each time against the same sled!!! - when everyone was studded, hard pack road racing use to be alot more consistent - I've beat the same sled consistently on hard pack then lost to it on snow and vice versa - too many varibles in snow racing - if you don't race at least 4 or 5 times against someone on snow, with someone other than the drivers starting you, you shouldn't even be on here talking about the results - anyone who's done their share of racing knows what I'm talking about - it is entertaining to listen to some of you though!!!![]()
I do agree here with what you are saying, I don't race in Powder either and I have been and raced in enough COSDRA drags to see what works and what does not. Sure traction and conditions play a role, but if you are racing the same guys week end and week out, then you know if it's conditions or the sled. Also, a full second is like 10 sled lengths. So to say that there is not much difference, is far off from the truth and harder conditions will allow the true hp to prevail.

I still have some extra tip weight in and am underevving a little but still pulling 10,500 - 10,600 under acceleration. My buddy's RTX is overrevving a little at 10,900 but the third Apex was probably on the money with some mods...ask him...PM: "Blurred vision" he'll tell you the same thing. He was the third sled.
Anyone that acually races will tell you that 1 or 2 tenth's of a second is huge at the finish line. His 800R is bone stock and it is very fast. He may be one of the lucky ones...who knows?

I hope so. Does anyone think there might ever be a production Turbo from Yamaha?
I love big HP sleds, love turbos... But in light of the number of fatalities alone in NY this year, I predict that it won't be long before the whole snowmobile industry gets affected by laws, lawsuits, restrictions, insurance, etc as a result of every increasingly high HP sleds.
Trust me, it is being looked at very closely that year after year new snowmobiles keep getting faster and more powerful, while riders keep getting stupider and eventually will give the government that final ammunition to step in and "help us protect ourselves" because we can't control our throttle thumbs...
Rememeber the muscle cars of the late 60's?
Or the wicked fast 3-wheelers in the late 80's?
Yup, the the government will tell us what we can ride soon, "for our own good"...
10 years ago a modded an piped sleds were " too fast" at a little over 100 HP. Today you drive a new 600 off the showroom floor at over 120 stock. Now you have guys, that can't control themselves on a 340, buying 150 HP land rockets. Even more liability is that these guys are adding aftermarket booster rockets to get 270+ HP.
Yikes...

Yes, very true. I only speculated that they will regulate sleds and not ban them. So what is the going insurance rate for a young buck on a 900RR or R1 these days?
Unfortunately the answer is more than the bike payment...
Full coverage on my Apex, thru State Farm, is $192 a year, for now.
Sled manufacturers have got to be looking at this and comparing that to the cost of developing an even bigger HP sled.
Don't get me wrong, I hope Yamaha comes out with a 225HP stock turbo sled. I know it can be done with what they already have.

Looking at actual stats, almost all snowmobile deaths have nothing to do with extreme hp. Hitting a tree, hitting a car, drowning in water, missing a turn at 70 mph all mixed with night riding with the all to often unfortunate presence of alcohol plays the biggest role. I think insurance companies think bigger hp sleds can add fire to the problem but actual stats show otherwise.

we are all addicted to full throttle or no throttle, the feeling of flying just 8" off the ground, isn't it great

Yamaha and the others are looking and talking with insurance companies about hp ratings instead of CC. ie.150HP, 120HP. You get the picture... Just like Outboard motors.

Mauri, The muscle cars of the 60's and 70's were never "banned" or even really regulated. They just got too expensive to run during the the fuel crunch of the 1970's.
Perfect example...have you seen the new 2009 Corvette ZR1?
620 HP - "semi production" MADE IN AMERICA Car....sweet
"The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 marks the return of an ultra-high-performance model to this American sports car icon. The rest of the 2009 Corvette lineup should remain largely unchanged. ZR1 represents a revival of a moniker that graced super-performance Corvettes from 1990-1995. The 2009 version has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that GM says is good for 620 hp."

But can an Apex beat it in the 1/4 from a standing start on grass? LOL.

But not as much torque as a Cummins diesel in a Dodge... those Corvette numbers can't be right... it must be slower.
And if that Corvette had a 6.2L naturally aspirated Apex engine, it would be 930HP. Boosted Stage 2 would be 1736 HP, Stage 3 would be 2635 HP !!!! I'm still not impressed...
Wayne, your right. They didn't "ban" those 60's and early 70's muscle cars, but the insurance companies killed them... The reason that some car companies attempted to hide real HP numbers for a few years (454 SS's, etc).
Yeah, I watched "American Muscle Car".

Emission reg's and fuel prices didn't help, and we are seeing a repeat of that in the snowmobile industry now.
i think we are off topic. Ooopps sorry

Yep,
My first car when I was 17 years old was a 1969 Pontiac GTO 400 with a 4 speed. I tried to rebuild the motor and make it "faster" when I was a senior in high school.
Anyway, it was realllly fast when I got done rebuilding it. Unfrtunately, It only ran for about 60 miles before I threw a connecting rod through the oil pan....lol
That was the last engine I rebuilt until this Apex motor that I just did. My Apex motor has 600 miles so I guess I'mm getting better at it
