I'm in also. I think I've seen plastic and aluminum gutter guards at home depot that could be cut and used as a support grill? What about just a couple of black 1- 1/2" ABS 45 degree pipe fittings facing forward for a kind of hood scoop ram air effect?

what about the BullsEyes that D&D has? they are like $40 for 6 of them.
you cut out a 1 1/2" circle and just snap them in. I am pretty sure they have the screen in them.
I thought they could be turned to shut the opening completely, but the ones in the pic don't look like it.
I will have to check with a buddy that has tested them.
may be able to put them on the side of the airbox under the hood.
they have Black,red,yellow,blue,green,& orange.

umm..we don't need any 'grate' material...just drill a bunch of 1/2" holes, like we used to do to Skidoo Formula windshields!!!
BUT, what about the fabric material??? Do any household heat system filters use such a material??? Repels water, but flows air???????
I was gonna go to Home Depot and snoop around at lunch...I got a $25 gift card for there..hehe.

another thing...how can this be beneficial?? SUPERTUNER dynoed without an airbox and lost power and was lean.
Is this mod helpful because we still have an airbox? Are we just leaning it out a bit?

Good Point.... Also, I was worried about cold weather riding as well. How much of a benefit will this give us.87gtNOS said:another thing...how can this be beneficial?? SUPERTUNER dynoed without an airbox and lost power and was lean.

You cant really similate a "ram-air" effect on a dyno....
this is a highly debated topic in the automotive world as most of you know...whether there are any real gains who knows but I did see a decent RPM gain after the install.

but this is not really creating a "RAM" air affect.
It is simply a hole in the air box.
Anyone look at the velocity stacks in the airbox?
IMO the need to be shortened for more HP.
The stacks are pointed foward and with this airbox lid mod the air still isn't directed into the velocity stacks.
On most bikes, HP is to be gained by shortening the stacks, some bikes come with 2 longer stacks in the middle, so installing 2 short ones in place of the long ones generally helps upper HP.
I am going to shorten my stacks and leave the airbox alone, other than some water drain holes in the bottom.

ok, so upon further inspection, those velocity stacks are rubber, and gonna be questionable about modifying. I got some more thinking to do......

He then put a fan in front of the nose (simulating the sled moving) and it did pick up HP. Plus it was warm air from his shop, not cold dense air like we will be feeding it87gtNOS said:another thing...how can this be beneficial?? SUPERTUNER dynoed without an airbox and lost power and was lean.

Fix claims the computer will compensate. From the reports from riders it sounds like it does87gtNOS said:again, more air is gonna need more fuel....
Even if it doesn't, I'm sure it's only leaning out an already rich mixture.

Guys.... What about the Ox air sensor in the air box. More air =more hp =more fuel .My truck (deisel)with 110hp boost, front winter cover on , less air =more fuel=lesspower.. proved it yesterday, removed the front cover and now she'll break free bare pavement at 80km,also myfuel consumption went back to an average of 13litres per 100 km. Butttttt will this Yamaha compensate for the turbulant climate change in the air box. Before I dremel my air box apart. Has anyone had any problems.. and also I did grind off the front tabs that you do not need for easy removal.. What where these little people thinking..
